Raging bulls

I'm not about to make a defense for bullfighting Trevor, I genuinely don't like it. My respect is more for people and cultures rather than for practices that are cruel to animals.

My fence sitting here is possibly because as a shooter and a fisherman I myself engage in sports that kill animals. In my case anything I bring back "from the wild" is for the table, and I never hunt or fish for the numbers, only for what I intend to eat.

During the war years here [in Ireland we called it the "Emergency"] there were severe shortages of meat and of imported fruit. Many families lived and survived on the protein from trapped or shot rabbits and pigeons, and from fishing. It is quite difficult for modern urbanised families more used to buying meat from supermarket shelves, bloodfree, no emotional tie to the animal's death, very difficult for these suburbanites to understand there was recently a time when supermarkets did not exist.

The skills of hunting are survival skills, and they should not be put aside just because we think we are now civilised and have invented supermarkets.

I agree with your point about Spanish children, they must be indoctrinated to grow up liking the sport. They "blood" children in fox hunting too, for the same reason. That is another sport I don't like and would not tolerate however.

Joe
