Chicane, props for remembering the 300C. The Firedome had more horses then cubes in 56, the 57 283 was chevy's first 1 hp per cube. Anyone remember the Olds Jetfire in 1963? The first Turbo Charged car sold for mass market appeal by a US manufactor. It used an aluminum Buick V-8 with a single scroll turbo to get 1 hp per cube with light wieght. I think it was under 250ci.

Chevy had a 427 as did Ford. The Ford 427 was totally different from thier 428, which was different from thier 429. 3 motors 1 cube apart, all different designs. Ford had what they called FE blocks as well as thier 385 series. That refered to the block design, not 385ci. Chrysler had a 426 Hemi as well a 426 Max Wedge, which was a bored out 413 Max Wedge. The 440 was a different design. As for small blocks the Chevy 350 was the best. I would rank the Mopar 340 second.

The Jetfire must have used the GM 215 CID aluminum V8, eventually sold to Rover & may even still be around today. The DeSoto might be the Firedome. The Crysler might have been the Firepower. A LITTLE before my time, but chicane was correct. The Jetfire was a 215 Aluminum V-8. Turbocharged by Garrett in 1963 to make 215hp and get very reasonable fuel economy for the day. Good technology that went to waste as the just make it bigger crowd won out. It's completely opposite now. Imagine what GM would be like today had the horrible 70's not happened and they were doing DOHC, 4 valve heads, turbos, etc, instead of just big old pushrod 2 valve head mega v-8's.
