I blew my trany
I added the External Filter kit to my trany, but unfortunately, I hooked it up wrong in the process, and about 1 hour later, trany went Kabloey.
I now have 2 cores to chose from to get either a rebuild, or ? Still a little confused as what I will do at this point. But will take some time to decide.

NO WAY!
Chris, you MUST be kidding!
I read Earl's post regarding the meet, saw that you got home, and was looking up yor profile to ask you how your modification finally went, and the "last post" section just about knocked me off my chair! What happened? Was it due to reversing the lines? Man, I am so sorry you had a problem after all that work!

From what I can tell so far, there was no fluid flowing thru the trany cooling circuit at all.
I drove at about 70-80 from the Meet to the border and the car was running great, I pulled into a gas station just before the border and felt something weird as I slowed to a stop at the pump. I get out of the car and smell burning trany fluid, so I check around, check for leaking hoses, checked the fluid level, all ok. I did recall that my power steering O-ring replacement dropped a bunch of ATF so I just guessed it was some of that dripping on the exhaust. So I go thru the border, drive about 5 miles and then the trany starts to bind, then some grinding then it stopped. The grinding was siginificant, enough for me to know that I'll be looking for a trany. So I wait for some-one to stop, cause my cellphone went dead, about 1.5 hrs later a couple stops by and offers help, I ask them to call me a Tow truck, Flatbed of course(I know its already too late, but who really knows) So an hr or 2 more go by, no tow truck, so again I check the trany dipstick and a strange smell much like burnt toast is now evident. I start the car, try drive, works, some grinding involved, but it works, I get to a closed gas station, try to locate a 24hr tow company, there were none listed in the area. I said, screw it, so I drove to another open gas station, pulled the belly pan, and checked the hoses and parts carefully, they were not even warm. So then I think to myself, DOH. So I disconnect the New filter and the Rad cooling loop and only leave the External cooler hooked up. I go thru another inspection, the Trany lines are now very hot, and I figure perhaps I can make it home. I get on the road, its in 1st, its in 2nd, its not going into 3rd, oh wait, nope, its not staying 2nd either. I have 1st and reverse. Still about 17 miles from home, average speed of 20 mph, make it home by 3:50 am. I will be checking thru the lines to see where I screwed up, or if the external filter just plugged up. But not today. I'm now tasked with getting my Legend ready to ride again. Based on the many issues I must now tackle, I expect I now need a parts car. My list included=s: Tires, Wheels, Trany, Engine mine is old and tired, emissions components, and a passenger side visor that doesn't droop, for a Pearlie.

Chris, from your last post...
...I'm led to believe your initial diagnosis is that it was a "plumbing" problem vs. an internal/mechanical problem?
I didn't know you had an additional tranny cooler under there: so there was the OEM filter and the loop through the radiator, the aftermarket cooler & the new, aftermarket filter assembly hooked up when you left the meet? How much tranny fluid did you end up putting in there, anyway? I wish I had crawled under there: your experience has put any plan I had to add either a cooler or another filter on absolute hold. Let me know what you finally find out. I couldn't be more sympathetic. I almost feel like I let you down. I know how concerned you were that the filter wouldn't seem to warm up. I guess the idea of seeing if disconnecting the final return line to see if any fluid came out was not such a bad one, afterall?

Sorry about your tranny......
HI Chris;
Sorry to hear about your tranny troubles. I ended up working all day yesterday, and even 1/2 of today. So much for me getting my weekend off.... Anyway, I got your message about you looking for tires, unfortunatly I don't have any aftermarket, but I do have several sets of stock ones. I also have a couple of trannies for you, should you decide to keep using an auto. Send me an email with your phone number and I can call you if you'd like... |

No lube.
Sorry to read that Chris, can you rebuild the Mini.
No flow through the cooler circuit means no lubrication to the gear train. The high set will suffer first from running in 4th. As you say the box is probably a write off. Harvey.

I still have to look to see where the problem is, because there is no reason for the flow to stop under any situation, but thats obviously not true. As far as you putting a hold on addding a trany cooler, I wouldn't wait to do that. Norm, you didn't let me down, not to worry, I even took it for a test drive after, and it heated up then. It could very well be the filter was defective, I'll just have to see.

Chris what type of filter was it. An transmission filter is different to an engine filter. It is much corser, as the pressure in the cooling system is much lower than the engine oil pressure, only about 10psi. If the filter is too fine it will cut the flow too much.
Not that it is much help now Harvey.

It was the B&M external trany filter, it was the right one. But I must have hooked something up wrong. Maybe the in and out on the rad. I used Passenger side as in, drivers side as out. And the trany filter fitting had an in and an out.
There is a possibility I had lots of crap floating around, and it plugged the filter, but I doubt it. fyi, I have a 94 rad with no screen in it. I also did a partial drain and fill with B&M Synthetic trany fluid, blue stuff.

That's really awful. I saw how much time you spent hooking up the filter, I'll be curious to hear what you find on the autopsy.
