Hot Start Issue, Starter Not Engaging - 5MT Swap
Very similar problem to this thread seen here: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...ight=hot+start
Only, I believe this relay mentioned there has been bypassed to the best I can tell. The car will almost always start when the car is cold, occasionally it will 'click' the starter a few times before it engages and starts. More recently when hot, the car will either 'click' the starter until it stops trying to engage or it will not even try to engage the starter solenoid at all. This has gotten worse over the past month or so, haven't had a whole lot of time to troubleshoot, but I'm oddly confused...very hit or miss. Usually requires waiting a few minutes or just roll starting the vehicle to try and restart once the starter quits trying to engage. Trans setup is from an 02-03 WRX. This is GreenMarines old SVX if someone might have an idea what it might be doing.

Re: Hot Start Issue, Starter Not Engaging - 5MT Swap
I had something similar happening on an EJ22, after many swapped parts, I found it was a poor fitting control terminal at the solenoid. Give it a good tug check, don't shock yourself either.

Re: Hot Start Issue, Starter Not Engaging - 5MT Swap
Are you using spade terminals on the Neutral Safety Switch? If so are they tight-fitting or do they just slide easily on and off? I replaced my starter relay because my car would often fail to start after my 5 speed swap. I would get one click then nothing, and would have to try anywhere from 1 to 20 times before it would start. The relay solved the issue...for a couple weeks. It didn't fail to start as often, probably only a handful of times really.
Well When I had my dash out recently one of my spade terminals on my NSS slide off when I slightly touched it, so I gave both a squeeze with some pliers and forced them back on. Since I have done that my car has not failed to start once. Of course it is still a little early to tell if this has really work, since, as I said, it has failed to start only a handful of times since I installed the relay. But so far so good, and easy enough to check if you don't mind the akward position laying on the drivers side floor. |

Re: Hot Start Issue, Starter Not Engaging - 5MT Swap
I will have to check both of those again.
I'm just perplexed about why it is mostly when it is hot.

Re: Hot Start Issue, Starter Not Engaging - 5MT Swap
A variety of frustrating intermittent electrical problems can be caused by heat, due to the expansion/contraction of incorporated metal conductors. Insecure connectors, poorly soldered joints and shorted turns in windings are typical.
