One of my trips was over 2,500 miles. All of the miles put together were over 12,000 miles (driving them home)

I'm still going to throw out the red challenge flag on the 170+ mph SVX. You would need closer to 355hp to get 3500+ lbs to accelerate to a constant of 170 mph, or 249.22 feet per second. The 928 S4 has almost 100 more horsepower then a SVX and weighs less, yet topped out at 174 at Bonneville. Tell me how a heavier car with less horsepower goes faster?

Maybe with more inertial mass it takes less energy, or rather loses less while attaining higher speeds?

What's the 928's aero coef?

Yes weight counts for the constant acceleration of the car, but it is Horse Power and wind resistance that produces the top speed of the car, weight doesn't count. The SVX is very clean, with the mirrors folded.

The Subaru SVX has a Cd of .29, 230hp and 230lb/ft, and a curb weight of 3580lbs.
The Porsche 928 S4 has a Cd of .29-.31 depending on article, 316hp and 317lb/ft and a curb weight of 3533lbs.
The 928 also has a higher final drive ratio of 2.75 verses the 3.55 in AWD SVX's allowing for more top speed.
So if a stock 928 can top out at only 172-174 on a 12 mile closed track, how can a SVX hit the mid 170's?

The overall top gear ratio of the SVX is 2.42:1.

The svx doesn't have the drag of those 13 inch wide rear tires.

Or it was a 92 with the secret extra 25 hp in power mode.

Maybe he had some stickers on the car of those hooked-up scoops yo-dog. Good for at least another 50 hp or more.

As I said before, it was recorded on GPS. I did not witness the readouts on the GPS as it was in another car following me. Chris(site admin) will vouch for me that the SVX is indeed capable of reaching the 170+ mile per hour mark. If memory serves me right, he said that with GPS in his SVX he reached 170ish at night with "Ideal Weather Conditions". What those conditions are are beyond my memory. Also keep in mind the GPS bases speed on triangulation between three satelittes or more, so the end product could be off by a few MPH. Just my experience. The other car was pacing with me the whole way through my run.

According to the svx.com site, the FINAL drive ratio is 3.55 for an AWD model. We are talking about roughly the same size cars with a huge power difference yet the SVX is faster? That's why I don't believe it.

I see it as possible if conditions were right and it was slightly bumped in power. I've had my XT6 going a few over 140mph (with correction for my speedo error assuming it continues at the same rate it is off at 70mph) and that is from 145hp new with 190k on the odo at the time with a dying engine. New it was said to top out at 124 for a 4wder but mine is a fwder. My Nighthawk tops out about 110mph with 73hp. That said I'm fairly certain our SVX provided we stuff some windows back in there for drag will pull 170mph easily but without a cage I'm not about to give it a try.

Yes the Final drive ratio is 3.55:1. BUT the overall ratio is the final drive ratio multiplyed by the 4th gear ratio. 3.55 X 0.694 = 2.46:1.

The Euro model is 2.56:1 and we have seen pics of them doing 260 + kph.
There are a lot of US cars that put out a lot more HP, but don't have the top speed to match. The difference is where, the torque peak is matched to the gearing. You can set it for acceleration or top speed. I guess the Porsche is set for acceleration, the SVX for top speed.

Harvey.
