several 4.44 ?s

Ok for those of you who dont know I am working torwards swapping in 4.44 final drive gears into the svx.

Do you guys think that this is overkill or will it be right on the money? I would love to get some different opinions on it.

Will this create any extra stress on the drivetrain and if so will the drivetrain be up to the stress?

I am having some severe trouble finding these gears. If any of you could help that would be awesome. I have been amazed by the amount of help one can get here in this commmunity. One member said to pm him and he could help me get them, i dont remember who it was and never recieved a pm back. If you can help find them please let me know.

As always thanks so much for the help.

If anything, I think it would reduce stress on the drive train as it will allow the car to accelerate with less strain but I could easily be wrong on that.

Would 4.44s be right on? That depends on your goals. If your goal is 1/4 mile and stop light drags you are right on the money. If you don't do much highway driving and stick to the city streets then 4.44s would be a superfun way to go! Great in an autocross too.

If your goal is a combination of 1/4 mile, top end and highway cruising you are off the mark. 4.11s would be the way to go for that.

If you want top end and highway comfort stay with stock gearing.

4.44's will also lower your fuel economy.

I dont care much for top end. top end has got me into some nasty tickets

I was told even with the 4.44 the car would still hit 150 which is more than enough for me. I do have to hit the highway quit a bit but that will calm down next year.

As far as i know i will be the first to do this. and with the help of you guys hopefully it will be successful.

yeah, you'll be sacrificing high-end torque for low-end pull, but there'll still be plenty of power on the high end.. you're also giving up your nice quiet highway cruiser.. stock gearing does 2,000rpm at 60mph, my 4.11's give me something more like 2,650.. 4.11's might put you over 3k rpm @ 60mph.. buzzy on the highway to be sure, but the oomph off the line is a good trade imho..

4.44 DRIVE RATIOS (US Market Vehicles)

Manual transmission vehicles w/ 4.444 (LSD) final:
Forester XT manual 2004+
Baja Turbo manual 2004+
Legacy Outback XT manual 2005+

Automatic transmission vehicles w/ 4.444 final:
Forester Automatic (non-turbo) 1998-2004+
Impreza 2.5RS Automatic 1998-2004+ (excluding TS wagon)

NOTE that ONLY the MY'00+ Foresters and MY'00+ Impreza 2.5RS (excluding wagon) have LSD rear differentials. It is advised to retain an LSD rear differential in the back of an SVX rather than switching to an open diff.

You'll need the front diff from an automatic obviously, and the rear diff out of any of the above.

I stuck a 4.11 auto in mine and here are the higher numbers that I got.
75 mph = 3000 rpm
80 mph = 3250 rpm
100 mph = 4250 rpm

I think it also threw my spedo off too. not sure but I think that it is about 5mpr slow reading.

I used a 96 Impreza tranny set up. There are a lot in the scrap yard. You could get one out of a 2.2L with the rear diff, and swap the whole tranny along with the rear ring and pinion or just the diffs. I paid about 900 for tranny and diff. 120 warranty.

I was told that swapping the whole tranny would not work, as it has like a vsd or something that would not be compatible with the tcu in the svx. What i plan on doing is just swapping the final drive gears.

any thoughts?

Steve,

The above note was useful.

What a couple of us NEED TO KNOW is did the '96 Imprezza auto trans you installed have VTD, which is different from SVX multi-clutch diff? Someone commented that there could be a problem for the SVX TCU if a VTD trans was used.

The unanswered question is whether 4.44 FORESTER trans with VTD is compatible with SVX TCU????????

Did you use the SVX TCU or the Imprezza TCU?

Was the swap completely successful? Please share more details.

Your reply would be most helpful to those of us wanting to swap 4.11 or 4.44 gears into our cars.

Thanks for your help!

proceed with some serious caution. The pinion from the stage 2 transmissions will not work in our transmissions. I am not sure if there ever was a 4.44 in a stage one. Make suer it is a stage 1 transmission pinion.

Thanks for your reply Speed Addict! [I also have the Need!]

So, a little more help from those that know, PLEASE,

THE 4.44:1 PROBLEM IS THAT

--Our TCU can not control a Stage 2 transmission??

--And, a Stage 2 pinion is not compatible with our SVX trans??

IS THAT ACCURATE?

SO,

--What was the latest model year for Stage 1 Subaru Transmissions??

--The '96 Imprezza 4.11 AUTO trans used by SVX-FF above was Stage 1??--

--Because Stage 1 trans were built sometime past the '97 model SVX, ??

Any and all replies appreciated!!

If you are looking for good 0-60 and 1/4 mile times on a stock or mildly modified SVX, the 4.44:1 R&P in the slushbox should be great. Second gear would top out at 65 mph before shifting, and third gear would top out at about 105 mph before shifting. On the highway, with the TC locked in 4th gear at 3000 rpm, the car would be going 71 mph. Not too bad either.

Why not just stick with the SVX slushbox, and install a 4.44:1 R&P in it? The SVX 4EAT is stronger than the other MPT slushboxes, and you know the SVX 4EAT works with SVXes. :-)

ok forgive me im a little less technically minded here,

when you say swapping the ring and pinion does that mean both the final drive in the transmission and in the rear end?
