Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I decided it was time to get my SVX a new cheap supplemental daily driver.

Last time I just grabbed a base model legacy lease, but I did not want to lease again this time.
Subaru's here were like $21K for an Impreza, $23k for a Legacy, which is more than I want to spend on a second car.

I didn't really need AWD on it, just something cheap on fuel, not a hatchback, and not terrible to drive...
So I went with a 2014 Mazda3 iSport 2.0L 6-speed manual:

For what it cost me, it is actually a pretty fun car to toss around these twisty mountain roads.
It reminds me a lot of driving my 2001 Impreza 2.5 RS coupe.

This is my first non Subaru in 14 years, will see how this goes...

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

my 97 SVX got new rear bearings both left and right..did the job myself with my fathers assistance, used his press. Car has 66k
The old bearings, had grease, but the rollers showed heat signs, they were noisy. I think they were redone at some point prior to me getting the car, and i think they didn't use the right grease maybe.

Some owners have noted that after repeated failure they also replaced the hubs (which may have distorted from bearing over heating). Something to keep in mind for the future.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Another 500km trip, Hamilton to New Plymouth. Got to love Mount Messenger.

Finally fitted my BBS wheels and replacement tyres.
Drives much nicer, the old tyres were well past their useful life span.

Paid someone smarter than me to fit a new alarm with remote start.
Seems to be very rare to see remote start cars in New Zealand. Don't know why, certainly couldn't buy a reputable brand alarm / starter kit locally from a dealer.
Ended up importing an Avital made by Directed Electronics (aka Clifford, Viper et al)

Still have to put my dash back to together. It's been dangling around my knees for the past 6 months now.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

The JDM mirrors arrived. Tested them to see if the folding function works and to determine which two wires power the folding (white/blk and blue blk). Found the JDM market does not have a convex mirror on either side. That's OK. Broke the assemblies down per the "how to" to allow better painting, interior cleaning, and convex mirror installation from a spare USDM right. Will NOT do the fitment mod of the "how to" as we will just swap to USDM bases after painting which is mentioned in another post here. Will continue work on the auto open/close circuit on the crappy weather days. Hope to bench test it next week.

Are using a JDM mirror switch as well?
Then when installed it would be upside down and all controls and diagrams would be reversed. Down is up and right is left, etc.

Would be so much more convenient to be able to add the folding ciircuit wired independently to the ignition --- unfold when the ignition is on and fold when the ignition is turned off.

The auto open/close circuit actuates the mirror open on car start up and closed at car shut off. No JDM or other switch needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0Q02pww3kw. The manual command switch in his circuit was for bench testing only.

However that being said we dropped a few $ to pick up the JDM switch assembly "just in case".

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Hot Darn. Our paint shop called and said the test sprays were done. After looking at 3 greens settled on No. 1 planned pick. Dec 28th the car will go in for a full repaint with Nissan D10 otherwise known as Emerald Mist Metallic. They will also replace rear fixed quarter windows (internal corrosion/lumpy in the black trim, paint and install a JDM rear spoiler, paint and install Dayle's side skirts and the generic Mustang front dam. They will also paint new for us JDM (with USDM bases) folding mirrors parts and spare door handles. No rush as it is winter and though she goes in the snow want to save her from road salt. (Our first SVX bought new in 92 or 93 died of road salt cancer).

Finished it up and tested. Found two errors we made. Nothing smoked and was able to add one missing lead and rewire the shutoff time transistor. Need to get a small project box and will move the fuse to be accessible outside the box (different type holder). Pleased with the result. Have adjusted the timers to suit the open and closed time of the SVX mirror motors (about 5-6 seconds each way). Will install it in the spring as it is too cold in the “garage” (I wish) ah car port and as the SVX will go for repaint the Monday after Christmas.

Gwyneth the repaint looks totally awesome. Great Color choice. Congrats. Love the Jdm sideskirts and rear spoiler as well. I always loved the folding side view mirrors. Cant wait to see your new queen. You have to come down for a mini meet with us Yankees.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I bought new shocks for my car. I like the handling and control of bilstein on my civic, but unfortunately there's no available for my svx so I ended up getting the koni's and because they are a good replacement for stock ones.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Change the rock cover (cam covers) gasket, and new spark plugs.
Doing the vacuum lines under the intake, and also have to replace the fuel hoses in the engine bay.

And going from cable clutch to hydro. So doing the pedals now. Going for the legacy turbo tranny and light weight flywheel, and stage 2 clutch.

then i can drive my svx again whit the good exhaust.
Custom made by exhaust shop, racing cats and stainless steel.
