Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

The only reason the upper failed, is because it looked like it was rubbing on the P/S line and made a slash in it. Other than that, it was fine.

Took some video of the sound. I can hear it at all times now, but in the video it's only audible on an off-ramp. Past 0:31 it's just video of the tachometer and road/exhaust noise.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I bought a set of brand new STi 8x17 wheels today for the SVX. I will get a new set of studded tires for the Outback and put the old ones on these for this winter to play around in the snow with the SVX. Something stickier for next summers track days in the spring.

Niki, not sure if you diagnosed your problem yet, but from the sounds of it it's a bad wheel bearing. Doubt it's tire noise, unless you have very crappy unevenly worn tires...

Re-adjusted the rear wiper. It was sitting too low, fixed the rear wash spray stream angle, which ws also too low. Cleared the front wash nozzles (were clogged with wax). Just when I started feeling good I checked the oil to find it low and making quite a mess around the drivers side rocker cover. Looks like I need to have that gasket replaced again.

I suspected the bearing as well as a bad tire.

The evidence is that my previous tire on that side was partially destroyed, suggesting that there is a problem external to the hub.
I've suspected alignment issues. The roads are such around here that I need it checked every year and I've not done that since last spring.
I've just been assuming up to this point that the noise was coming from the CV joint. Now that it has been repaired... the search continues.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Replaced the door speakers. Now I don't have to keep the fade completely to the rear. Can one of the audiophiles out there let me know if I am going to have to get some sort of ring to bridge the gap between the door panels and the speakers.

Also ordered a set of hancook i-cepts for my second (better) set of rims.

How did you clean the nozzles? I was thinking of attaching a thin copper wire to my soldering iron and sticking it in there.

Nothing so elaborate, just a small sewing needle.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Silver SVX: Removed the driver's side radiator cooling fan assembly. No difference in the temp gauge reading in normal driving (but I wouldn't want to give it a go in summertime traffic).

Had for many months noticed an odd, very intermittent whine from that region. When an idler pulley bearing seized I figured I'd found the culprit. Wrong. Then the other day when I shut off the car after a hard run I felt a faint shudder and heard a slight rumble for just a half-second after the engine had stopped. No-brainer at that point. Guess the motor shaft bearings are shot. Also noted some hairline cracks in the face of the fan, I suppose from 20 years of exposure to all that heat. Already have shiny new goods in hand; $230-something.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Was able to turn my CD up loud enough to drown out the exhaust noise.

So it's been abnormally warm here recently.

It snowed heavily, then warmed severely causing interesting ice formations in the road, then that was plowed.

So it snowed again yesterday, mostly overnight, then sort of began melting throughout the day on the topmost layer, but stayed frozen underneath.

You know those grooves on the side of the road that make a loud buzzing noise and vibrate the car when you drive over it so you wake up as your about to swerve off the road from fatigue, or if you're just not paying attention.

EVERY road, every inch of road today was just like that, but WORSE. 60 miles later my ass was numb, but the SVX took it like a champ (the road, not my ass).

I expect tomorrow to be at least as bad.
