Ah...
Teachers.
Does contract mean private or government school? I pray they are way above sea level, in a concrete building with one heck of a roof. I huddled with mine in the basement once....tornado alert... but the Caymans are in for a completely different ball game. God bless them. By any chance, would your friend Mike be the Michael in this story? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/3649448.stm Don

No Don
Don't know that chap. He is described as a Briton by the BBC. Anyone from the geographic region sometimes known as the "British Isles" who becomes newsworthy for a positive reason can expect to be temporarily adopted by the British Press as a Briton or British. Positive reasons might include winning a Grand Prix or international rally or golf tournament, winning some international kudo like a literary award or a movie "Oscar". This lack of research or forgetfulness is generally carried out on the basis that if you complain or object to the inaccuracy of the report, you are obviously a rampant Republican [as in IRA] at heart. On the other hand, if you are from these regions and are newsworthy because you are involved in massive international fraud, drug-dealing or you are a serial killer, then undoubtedly you will be described as "Irish". Whether or not you hail from the parts of this island that are technically British. Selective citizenship is how I think of it. Can't answer your question, I think the school is private though. Mike has dual nationality, carries both passports, regards and would describe himself as Irish. I fervently hope that they all remain safe, and I think that the hurricane is ripping apart homes of poorer people who can't afford to build strong. I will be dipping into my pocket for the people of Grenada, Jamaica, Caymans and Cuba when the Red Cross appeal is put out. Florida too if required, I'm sure not everyone there is mega-rich with a holiday home. Times are tough, we need to stick together. Joe

I tend to recall a gentleman Jean and I met in a pub in Uxbridge, making a very similar statement to yours Joe. Almost an exact copy, so I know you are very correct. But just as I had friends in various places, I though you might have met this chap on your travels or through business. My sister and brother-in-law have close friends in Ireland that they met on one of their many visits to the Emerald Isle. Same in England.
I am catching some news on the web and Weather Channel about the Caymans, and it doesn't sound good. People standing on their roofs to stay above the storm surge. Hopefully that is just along the coasts, but then nothing on the Caymans is very high above sea level. The darn thing is heading for the Mexico-Cuba gap and then into the Gulf.....there is nothing to slow it down except maybe some wind shear or a dry front along the way. Folks from New Orleans to Panama City are watching the reports very carefully, but it looks like except for high surf, most of west Florida other than the panhandle has dodged a bullet with this one. The folks to the west will not be as lucky... Don

And don't look now, Don, but it looks like the Appalachians will be treated to a major rain event regardless of Ivan's final track. You'd best find a strong tree to climb just in case.
Please take care. Ron.

Weather link.
I've been following progress on this link Mike sent me.
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ftp/graphics...F/100853W5.gif It sure looks to have changed direction in the last 12 hours, Florida dodging a bullet like Don says. Heading for Atlanta now, where I have an aunt, and no doubt headed for many SVXers. You all keep safe over there. Joe

Ivan the Terrible
Yes Ron, that storm track doesn't look good for us. We weathered the last one because we had two weeks of no rain. The Greenbrier River was low enough to walk across, and the ground could hold plenty of water.....this time, I'm not so sure.
But those folks on the Gulf coast are looking down the barrel of one VERY nasty storm. Joe, let us know when you are able to hear from your friend OK? Don

BTW folks, don't think Mother Nature is planning to quit after letting Ivan tear up the Gulf Coast then dump wind/rain up the Eastern Seaboard....Storm #11 is forecasted to grow in strength and guess where it's headed (see plot from the weather guys where I work). https://www.patrick.af.mil/45OG/45ws...stormplot2.jpg |

Don't expect word from the Caymans for a day or two, until electricity supplies are back.
Also, I imagine everyone will be mad busy with the clean-up after the flooding. Will let you know when I get news. That #11 does not look too healthy Lee. Seeing as how you work there, do you not have any influence? Ask Mother Nature to give Florida a break?? Joe

If they were smart they would leave. A cat 4/5 cane is nothing to get ballsy with. For the sake of your family i would suggest trying to get them to vacate if the storm stays anywhere near them like it looks like its going to. I hope they decide to listen to you and heed your words you tell them.

I did my Navy "A" school training at Corry Field/Station
http://www.pafw.com/corry.htm I saw on the Weather Channel that some Navy guys were being moved from their barracks to the Pensacola Civic Center, but that is a very large roof to take much of a beating. Most folks my age remember Hurricane Camille. This storm is not that strong, unless it intensifies, but still a big threat. Especially rain... http://www.maritimemuseum.org/camille/ If your folks are not on high ground away from the beach, you might want to talk them into evacuating....just to be safe. The last thing I saw looked like it might come in at Mobile Bay, but the storm is strongest on the right side of the eye wall, toward Pensacola. Don
