Would ATF being too cool result in a difference in shifts....by that i mean feeling and timing.

Nik,
Run your external cooler in series as suggested upthread, or ditch it altogether. Where you live, you probably don't need it. I have a medium-sized supplemental cooler, in series. It was twenty-two degrees here this morning, and my TC didn't lock at all during my 12+ mile drive to work (@ 55-70 MPH, hilly terrain, 1 traffic light). Clearly, at this time of year, I don't need the added cooler. But come summertime... dcb Last edited by dcarrb; 12-28-2004 at 08:42 AM. |

Considering the summer heat coupled with the way I drive I can assure you I need a cooler.
During the winter I suppose I can find some way to heat things up. Hooray for backwards engineering.

Put some aluminum foil on the cooler. That should warm it up.

Critical Update.
No cardboard no aluminum no anything extra.
Tonight after work (approx 11:10pm) I started up, parked with the handbrake in drive, and chatted with a coworker (GL wagon owner) about our cars. Temp tonight according to the SVX thermo was 2 deg F sitting, -1 deg F moving. I drove home, (7 miles) nothing. Parked in drive again and let her run while I grabbed a few things (xylene and stuff). Went on my way to the gas station, TC locked as it is supposed to. It did struggle a few times. I'm sure that's because it was on the verge of locking temp. I'm also sure this was the problem FATS couldn't find when I explained it to them. Hesitation. I'm positive now that it was just my confused TC as when the temp is extremely cool or warm there is no hesitation, and what confirmed it for me was a series of 3 hesiitations ending with a lock at about 50. I'm not going to change anything but my morning starting habit. If anything I just said confuses you or doesn't add up ask me to elaborate but please be specific on what.

TC locks up at 150°F and at lockup the oil will start cooling. with your cooler and ambient temps it will take no time at all for the oil to cool below 100°F at which point the TC will unlock and the cycle repeats.
Mine would do this at -11°C and NO extra tranny cooling.

Yeah it would go back and forth depending on whether I would stop or not, but I took the highways. I can weave through the city and make a 15 mile trip with more stoplights if need be.

You said that the stock cooler was bypassed(BTW i Skipped the arguments and probobly missed some posts). I would suggest running both coolers is series allowing your ATF to heat up quicker, w/out the risk of having your car hit something, and therefore allowing the tc to lock. The external cooler will allow the fluid to remain at a usable temp. Although alaska is frigin cold you should be able to drive relatively normal with them in series. I personally think it would be the smartest setup.
