Switched my wipers to winter mode.
It's snowing! Now I have to get my snow tires... Anybody have a favorite snow tire?

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

depends how serious you are about your snow tires. i have 4 studded hankook i-pikes on an alternate set of wheels but they are more aggressive then most people want. really good in the snow and studded tires are better than anything on ice, i have previously had the blizzak revo and other studless snow tires that come close but just not good enough.

took to emissions, passed easily. freaked out when my wife told me she noticed the rear window was cracked until she clarified that it was barely open not broken.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I'm looking at a set of Michelin X-Ice in 215/55/16 at "90%" for $69/ea.
Any experience with those?
I don't think I need studded. I plowed with my '88 f350 last year on Traction King M+S tires with less than half tread with no problems. I think my SVX should be ok since I don't plan on doing too much plowing with it.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I drove through snow Jeeps were stuck in ,with my 50% worn Goodyear Ice and snows. Went up a 1 mile steep ( car had to down shift ) grade covered with 4" of wet snow that was un-plowed. That is when I passed 4 stuck FWD cars and a JEEP. Unless u are looking at the optional SVX 7' plow rig, I don't think you need really aggressive tires .

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

the michelin xice are pretty similar tread wise to the hankooks i have. your f350 probably does so well because it's heavy. the plow truck at work has worn out regular tires on it and has never had a problem for this reason, the plow alone weighs about 800lbs. the svx weighs a lot so any good snow tire would work pretty well.

edit: jeeps suck in the snow because they are too light for how wide their tires are, if you keep your tires fairly thin you will actually have better traction than if you had 235's

Cracked 140k miles today. 20k more and I'll have put more on it than it had when I bought it.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

That's what I figured. I am planning on getting 215's since they are a little narrower than the stock tires, and since the car is fairly heavy anyway, I think they will cut through the snow pretty well.
I should try putting my 8' Fisher on it and my Hiniker sander in the trunk!
Who needs a truck anyway

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I filled the gas tank and took her for a spirited drive in prep of parking her for the winter, as it is SNOWING outside, and I'm running on summer tires..

Those X-Ice came up on the discontinued list a few years ago in a size to fit the outback. I sent 2 sets up to NY for my brother and his friend. I only heard good things back about them.
