I suppose suggestions on options are helpful, without pissing on other options, but, really, I just invited people to let me know if they saw something that fit the description of 1.AWD, 2.Manual, 3.Decent power, 4.Doesn't need major work and 5.Less than 125k miles.

Re: Looking for manual AWD car

I have to say, this has been an interesting exercise. I will publish my findings when I am done. I think it will be useful to people.

On a related subject, does anyone know if the EJ22 can have the heads from the EJ25 placed on it? Are there extra sensors that keep such a thing from being possible? The thought is to take the more reliable 2.2L engine and make "Quattrovalvole".

Re: Looking for manual AWD car

ej22 block with ej25 heads will work but compression will be lowered and youll have to swap in the ecu that goes with the ej25 heads and intake.

better option is putting and ej25 block between some ej22 heads to raise compression, then can just use the ej22 stock ecu and wiring harness etc.

Re: Looking for manual AWD car

Isn't the EJ22 already a four-valve engine?

You are correct. I never had a subie with the 2.2. I had always thought they were 2 valves per cylinder but I must have been recalling the EA series. The reason for the original question was that I was wondering if a blown EJ25 could be replaced by a EJ22 and if using the EJ25 heads on it would be beneficial. I found the answer to the first question, which is yes, and especially if it is a 1995 EJ22 engine. Now I know that using the EJ25 heads would not be beneficial, if even possible.

This conversation is getting to be boring. I'm signing out; and good luck to both with your sarcasm. Hope your sons and daughters don't pick it up...

Re: Looking for manual AWD car

Here are the results of my search.

First, on the subject of ratings, I found several options but CR was out due to its questionable methodology and the fact it is pay. Of the rest, four seemed worth investigating. I mentioned the pros and cons of each above. I gathered reliability data on several cars that met my original criteria of manual with AWD or limited slip FWD. I didn't gather data on every single car that met the criteria but I stuck with ones I liked, had heard good things about or had been suggested to me. The list included Subaru Imprezas and Legacies, Audi A4, BMW 330xi, Volvo S60 R, Jaguar X, Honda Civic Si, Acura TL, Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, Mazda Speed6, Infiniti G20t and I30t and others.

I then took models and years for which I had data from all four rating systems and averaged over the four. Finally, I did a correlation of each system with the average. It did not surprise me which ones came out the best. The Reliability Index from Warranty Direct and the MSN ratings from Idenifix were best correlated to the average. The TUV ratings and JD Power ratings were not well correlated. I don't think the JD Power ratings are biased but they just don't look at cars when they have sufficient miles and years on them. TUV is very suspect. They are a German organization and, SURPRISE, the German cars seemed to rate out much better in their ratings than the others.

As far as the cars were concerned, the Acura TL, Honda Civic Si, and Subaru Impreza did the best followed by the Legacy and the Volvo S60 R. Some select years of other models also came out above the "cut line" but, in general, the other models didn't do so well. And it should be noted that the Subies from the head gasket years didn't either. In fact, one thing I really like about the MSN ratings is that they tell you what the car typically fails for when it does. I wish they were a little more critical and had more resolution to their ratings. 3 levels isn't enough to catch certain minor issues or to catch when major issues are somewhat less frequent.

Re: Looking for manual AWD car

....Volvo S60 R, Jaguar X, Honda Civic .....

I would suggest that the Jag X may not be a good bet...suspect transmission known for early failure, "sealed unit". A Google Search will give more specifics. Just my 2 cents..

Yeah, like I said, it didn't make the cut.
