The Japanese didn't advertise their way to success, though. They made small, gas-sipping, reliable cars with good build quality to gain a foothold in the US during the fuel crisis. Those Japanese carmakers agreed to work together to minimize direct competition with each other and compete more with American brands, much like the way that the Japanese consumer electronics industry took over in the US by working together, collaborating and sharing technology, and competing with American companies instead of each other. In Japan, it's called good business practice; here, it would have been called collusion. The Japanese government played a key factor in outlining the overall battle plan and and having the muscle to get all the companies in line with that plan.

Either way, it wasn't advertising dollars. Just like how Volvos were built like tanks at one point and have exploited that image ever since.

I'm not talking about the 70's and 80's and early 90's. Imports WERE better cars back in the early 90's. I wouldn't dispute that. I'm Talking about NOW. The 21st century, where despite the lack of evidence to support the idea that imports are better than domestics, there is still this idea that "nothing's built like a Toyota". In fact there are 10 automakers that build cars BETTER than Toyota. The import companies built good cars to build a good reputation, and even now that their quality has fallen enough to meet or even drop below the quality of domestic vehicles, they still exploit that past image through creative advertising.

I get ya. What I'm saying is that they're simply riding that reputation from years ago, just like Volvo is. Sorry, I must have been speaking SVXanese earlier. It's my native language.

i think you're confusing "initial quality" (1st 3 months, rattles, stupid stuff that gets fixed under warranty) with long term quality (unless you can see into teh future.)

Domestics haven't proven themselves just yet, and i'm not getting bit in the a55 again until i see evidence proving otherwise. besides, the big 3 aren't building cars that i would want to buy, or even look at (in my price range, anyway.)

1 - long term reliability depends on the owner, not the factory. and...as TOYOTA THEMSELVES say "the best new cars make the best used cars".

2 - It is true that the improvements that domestic manufacturers have made will only just be starting to be noticeable now. So yes, if you are thinking along those lines, you would be better served to wait to buy ANY car, because within the next few years, you will notice the long term quality of all changing drastically. The imports will start becoming the "problematic cars" and the domestics will take over the "rock solid reliable" mark. This has already begun as evidenced by long term tests performed by magazines and professional evaluation organizations.

3 - If you have no interest in American cars because you find them dull or unattractive, why are you even arguing? Seems like you have no need to worry about this anyway.

The Volvos are overpriced, reliable, bland boxes on wheels. I don't see how Ford has had any effect on their designs, since in the old days, Volvos were overpriced, reliable, bland boxes on wheels. <ducks and runs in the other direction for cover...>

Ford has almost nothing to do with Volvo. They are more of a partnership. Basically Ford says "do what you want, just give us some of the money you make".

Not that it would be any better if Ford DID do something. They have alot of issues to work out themselves now.

like SHADOW said used cars depend on owner on how good they last.

my dad is a independent dealer and we get many used cars with alot of miles on them, like 200000 to almost 400000 miles on them but still run strong. and i get to drive all the cars my dad brings home around. i drive all the cars hard when i mean hard i mean hard. with no problems.

svxfiles is also a dealer he should know somewhat of what i am talking about.

as long as u do the normally schedlued maintainece your car will last forever

my brother and i used to own a particular car of the same make, model, and year (Shadow knows which one ). our computers both went out at roughly 70,000 miles. what preventative maintenance should we have done to prevent that? i'm sure it was just a coincidence.

You forgot to mention that the apex seal and rotary are basically the whole engine.

Also if you change the oil often and be sure to to give it the propper ventilation needed, in case of mods.

Like with almost any car, all it needs in most cases is the propper TLC to ensure problems like that don't arise. However, maintainence can be costly or there is even some problems that are very hard to avoid.
