Okay, how can I just insert a picture into a post without having to make it an attachment?

once the page that has the pic you want to post comes up, copy the web address. To post the picture, put the link after the code . Looked at the pics in your locker and they're pretty large and not 56K friendly. Might be better to post attachments. -Chike

Thanks! I can make the images much smaller to make them more "dial up" friendly -- I try to keep them under 200k now. -Bill

Sorry. In giving you the code, it made the network think I was trying to post a pic... However, I'm sure you saw the correct instructions when you hit the 'quote' button. Either way, for prosperity I'll post the instructions in reverse order: Copy the link when the picture in your locker you want to post comes up. Paste it into the desired part of your post. At the end of the pic link put [/IMG] and at the start put [IMG]. -Chike

Bill, can you post a picture with some arrows showing the path of the exhaust flow through the muffler?

Mychailo,
Sure, might take me a day or two...still focusing on getting my suspension back together (gotta love 6061 and a pneumatic cut off wheel for "contouring"!) -Bill

Mychailo, the best picture is the LEFT HALF. It shows four rows of parallel tubes. Also compare LEFT END. I believe that that lower pipe is the only entrance to that end chamber. Once the pressure reaches an end chamber, the exhaust must pass inside the open long transverse pipe to reach the opposite end exhaust tip. What is not seen is that some of the walls have round openings while other walls have 'pass through' tubes. One of the pictures shows two tubes of unequal lengh at the top of the muffler, to allow pressure to equalize within the various chambers. It is not readily apparent in the pictures, but the pressure has some path to the inner five chambers and then to the end chambers. Notice the compact chamber where the exhaust enters, and notice the angle cut on the inlet tube. So, what is the path? Simply put, the pressure must reach the end chambers via wall openings and/or tubes, enter the open pipe in an end chamber, and then pass the full length of the muffler to exit the far tip. Other than the open ended pipe, only the few perforations allow entrance/exit to the pipe. Go back and read my earlier description, and then study the pictures. I cut only the two long transverse 'exit' pipes between the walls in the inner five chambers, leaving the exit pipes intact in the end chamber to which it exits. This will greatly shorten the path to the tip, and probably increase the decibels proportionately. As I said, the length of the exhaust to the tip is nearly three feet longer than it would appear, due to the long transverse pipes. This may contribute to a 'bigger', more luxury car sound, for a 'personal luxury sports coupe'. Many really enjoy the sound of the stock system. As the pictures indicate, Subaru didn't just slap some off-the-shelf muffler on the SVX.

I took a quick look at the muffler while I was at my machinist's place on Monday and started to draw out the flow - then it started making my head hurt, so I stopped . There is no "single pipe" flow path. Once the exhaust gas enters the muffler and takes its initial 90 degree turn to the right, things start getting interesting. It enters the end compartment (which has two solid walls - other than the pipes going through them) and then exits into the next compartment which has a perferated end wall - this is where the gas starts "bleeding" around, as it will bleed out of this compartment through the end wall and through the pipes within the compartment.
I'll hopefully have a picture with notes on it sometime in the next week. -Bill
