I usually drive in 'D'.
I use '3' when in severe stop and go traffic. Such as a back up on the Beltway (I-695 in Maryland). This prevents excessive shifting into and out of overdrive. I use '3' (along with the manual button pushed) when driving in snow. This allows me to start in 2nd gear (manual) and use the engine to do some braking (instead of the brakes). I was told by a Subaru TECH. to use '3' when going to the Emissions station before a test. This puts my RPM's at about 3200-3500 at Beltway speeds. I stopped downshifting after my first transmission self destructed. Transmission #2 lasted a LOT longer (but still went belly up). Clyde |

i drive mainly in 2nd around town in stop and go traffic and 3rd on the highways mainly and if im in the mood also in drive.
i feel the power curve is alittle higher up in the rpm bands i love the feeling if i punch it i can make my away any traffic if need be. also i dotn liek the transmsions shifting to much the car has a 7,000 rpm redline might as well make the best use of the full rpm band. but if im on a long trip or want to get the best in gas milage its always in drive. basicaly if im in the spunky mood manualy other wise its in drive

D4 license threat
Must admit when the car is in it's stride in D, it is so easy to be doing illegal speeds without realising it.
Mine reaches 80+ in D before the tacho sees 3000 RPM. At this speed it feels like 50. A very civilised way to go, no doubt about it. Has anyone ever noticed if you bring the car up to about 4000 rpm in 3, then engage D, it drops the revs about 1000 to 3000? What it does not do is become significantly quieter. The overall sound level stays the same, although the pitch of the engine at 3K is more restful than at 4K. It's starting to growl that nice sound above 4K. What I'm getting at is the car would not be noticably noisier inside if the final drive was a good deal lower than what we have. It would pull harder in all gears, be more sporty and responsive, maybe even keep the quarter milers happy. Be an interesting experiment to change to the Legacy final drive Harvey mentioned, possibly the ratio Randy had at first when he was 2WD. Anyone ever try it?? Joe

Johnny,
I am sincerely sorry that we appear to have got at cross purposes in this thread due to working in the medium of print and both being unable to correctly read between the lines. I did not understand your " tops out " which I now see has been probably correctly interpreted by Joe. This topic has been aired before and my concern, as I have said, is that no one is given bad advice. The thread now contains valuable discussion and includes worthwhile fact and there is no danger in this respect. Although possibly not at first intended threads here do develop into a debate which muist be a good thing and if not is certainly interesting. Kind regards, Trevor.

An auto with 4.11:1 gears and a Legacy TCU would be a bullet proof unit. If you fitted 4.44:1 you could spin all four. As Randy is the only one, I know to have run this ratio and he won't say. Harvey.

Driving in Manual in traffic.
My wife often uses the SVX for commuting across the city at made good average of about 7-10 MPH on most occasions as she travels at times of peak traffic. Over the last month or two she has been driving in manual as I have asked her to do and I am interested to note that someone else has decided on this option,
The perceived advantages are, less wear and tear through the needless shifting of ratios and a possible saving of fuel. Disadvantage could be that the torque converter will be called on to work slightly harder but to my mind overheating should not occur as the loads will be moderate, 2 is a reasonably low ratio and fast acceleration and high power transfer is not involved. The equation appears to me to end up positive. What do others think ?

I do think that better ratio will let me select "D" more often.

And while I have the trany out, say"easy to do" please say that
It makes so much sense, why aren't others doing it??? or are they and just not telling, so that their SVX can be a true sleeper

Well Chris, I can assure you it will transform the way the car performs, It will provide quicker acceleration, reduce the load on the box by 20%, or allow you to increase the engine output by 20% without overloading the box. Like a 50 hp shot of nox.
Harvey. I'm also aiming for those 4.44 to 1's after reading this thread and the one that Chris alluded to. The 50 hp shot of n2o to go with the 105 hp shot I already have should be quite thrilling. Although I have yet to spin the tires, not that I would want to.

Confirm a point:.....
Quote:
Eh, Phast Phil, you are the man could confirm a point Harvey raised. The D drivers let the box do it's thang, and Lwin pointed out it makes it's way real quick into D at 45 mph. Would you normally change up to 5th gear at 45 mph, yes or no? My guess is you probably drive in 4, or even 3 around town, at 45 the car has to be rolling at tickover. Joe

Re: Re: Driving in Manual in traffic.

Manual Mode only works in 2 and 3. If your wife is using it round town for shopping and so on, I think I may have mentioned that any extra heat from torque slippage starting in 2 would be compensated for by having a lot less 1-2 shifts. I mean this from the point of wear and tear, rather than heat production. Unless it was very hot climate or total gridlock traffic, it should do no harm. If it was really hot, and the oil temp was reaching excessive levels [and we have no gauge, do we Mr Fuji?] it would be wise to use Normal mode. The extra revs used would force more ATF to travel through the cooler. Sorry for being so longwinded. I see it as OK, unless conditions are very hot and stressful. Joe

I have a tranny cooler and drive in '3' all the time save for extended speeds above 60kph then it goes into 'D'.
Thanks to the advice on here! James
