Re: subaru lover's motorcycle
A different take on the premise:
Although I am more than fond of the current very capable crop of BMW motorcycles, the rationale that the flat twin bike would be the mount of choice for the Subaru owner just because it has a flat twin engine [vs flat four or flat six for Subaru cars] does not I feel take full account of the design philosopy for the SVX IMO. The bike below is the machine of choice for the discerning SVX owner. It is a Yamaha GTS 1000 from about 1992. It was designed purely as a sports tourer, as was the SVX. It was designed to be a technological tour de force, as was the SVX. It has wonderful suspension and steering, as does the SVX. It is designed to be anti dive and anti squat, as the bikers among us will be well aware of how most bikes nose dive under hard brakes. This one does not. It travels flat and with marvellous chassis control, a real floating ride, just like the SVX. This particular bike belongs to one of our members, stevek, and he was kind enough to give me a spin on it. A cool, cool motorcycle. Thanks Steve. Joe

I rode a GTS when they first came out, would love to have one, but a nice one still fetches a hefty price....

I really liked it when i rode it, the anti-dive that the swingarm front suspension made made it MUCH easier to get on the brakes in a corner (which is pretty much a no-no on a regular bike)..let you go into a corner much hotter, and brake later...very capable set-up, it's a shame it never really caught on....BMW's Paralever front end gives some of the same benefits, but not as well as the GTS's system did

Re: subaru lover's motorcycle
RADD is a very cool system, and the GTS1000 is a cool, but quite complex bike. Probably harder to find GTS1000 parts than some SVX parts now-a-days.
It is unfortunate that more bikes aren't built with alternative front suspensions to telescoping forks. I like Duolever (which is properly Hossack front suspension). Duolever is lighter than RADD with a direct mechanical link to the handle-bars, rather than hanging the front suspension off the bottom of the engine/frame, with remote connection to the handle bar headstock. Hossack/Duolever also similarly disassociates suspension compression from braking effect, and operates pretty much like an SLA car suspension. Some people keep claiming that the Duolever is remote, and not wonderful on feedback. But frankly, even moreso than telescopic forks, that is a matter of tuning and design. BMW K-bikes are very long wheelbase, and aren't the most nimble to respond, anyway, so they aren't going to behave like an HP2 Sport or S1000RR anyway. BMW hasn't yet revised the Duolever for a second generation yet. K1600 might get a second generation of Duolever design. Norman Hossack showed how brake dive, and handling response can be tuned in and out of the system by damper settings, and control-arm geometry, just like any SLA suspension can be tuned. It is actually more versatile, by design than having to compromise a design by adjusting rake and trail to find a balance between stability and quickness of steering, where adjustments can't really separate rake from trail, to adjust them independently. (like not being able to adjust camber and caster independently) Hub centered steering like RADD, Bimota's TESI, and others are another big ball of complexity with transmitting steering and braking input and feedback from the remote handle-bars, to the hub-carried wheel, through a swing-arm that doesn't even go anywhere near the handle-bars. Good for Center of gravity, and purity of steering action at the hub, but the control systems are complex. Both are interesting systems. This bike combines an alternative front suspension, with the R1200R boxer engined bike... http://thekneeslider.com/archives/20...ed-motorcycle/

Re: subaru lover's motorcycle
Boxer has obviously studied these hub centred systems at a deeper level. I myself find them interesting in what they do, rather than the engineering of how they do it.
That's why I was charmed to get a run on Steve's GTS. I might buy one of these bikes still, I like the way they travel. We were both agreed that what would be really interesting would be a GTS frame with a Blackbird engine. That would be a serious bike to have. Joe
