That's cool Tom. I'm no expert as this is my first Subaru. But I'll be more than happy to share my knowledge/experience with you...

Chike,
I'd recommend a tranny cooler also...I mean, it for sure won't HURT it any...and they only cost about $30...cheap insurance in my opinion...

Huck,

If I ever get into AutoXing my car heavily or going to Summit Point with Harry (newsvx) I may look into getting one. Right now, I just don't see it as a necessity...

The 4heat just likes to cook I guess.

Anyone doubting the need for a tranny cooler should at least install a temp gauge and then make a decision after their heart starts beating again. Normal traffic with stock cooler on a 70 degree day = temps in excess of 220

Did a test...

It was 51* on my onboard readout.

After driving 20 minutes from my work to home on the interstate at 70mph, I took my car on my favorite back-road for another 20 minute romp through some twsities. I then went to a nearby neighborhood and drove around at the posted 15mph for another 10 minutes. Went back on the road and torque braked my car up to stall twice and did two runs to redline going through both first and second gears each time.

After all of this, I finally drove home and popped my hood in the driveway. Felt my intake mainfold and it was too hot to touch (~160*+). I then pulled the dipstick to my transmission and allowed a few drops of ATF to fall into my palm. While the ATF was quite warm, it was nowhere near the temp of intake mainfold. Tried this with my engine oil using the dipstick and nearly burnt my palm with the freaking hot oil!!!

Either way guys, I may look into getting a temp sensor for my ATF, but my transmission seems to be running very cool.

-Chike

P.S. I'm not sure how much this cools my ATF down, but after doing my 4.11 trans swap back in July, I did add a full bottle of Lucas Oil Transmission additive. The additive is supposed to reduce slippage, protect internal transmission parts and reduce operating temps...

DO you just add the lucas juice to the dipstick? Ive been trying to get a bottle for the longest time but every autozone and auto parts store is always sold out.

Yup, you add it through the dipstick hole. Best to get a $0.99 funnel from Walmart to prevent spillage. The Lucas Oil additive is very thick, so you can make it pour faster by warming it up in a tub of warm/hot water.

I always find a bottle on the shelf at Advance Auto Parts.
