I would call that entirely inaccurate. Sure, GM owns 20% of Subaru, but they have zero control over Subaru's product line.

FHI sold interest in Subaru to GM because they wanted money to invest in some technologies that they would not otherwise have been able to explore. That's how I understand it, anyway. Apparently, there was some collaboration between Subaru and GM on a new wagon, but that seems to have fallen through. Subaru would not abandon features that they consider part of their image, like the boxer engine, and that seems to have been the reason the collaboration failed.

As was said before, the two Daewoo companies were different and separate. That's like saying that GM should honor Ford's warranties if they ever go under. It's just one of those misunderstandings. But interesting, nonetheless.

As for the GM/Subaru comment...the new Subaru Baja is built on a GM platform. That was their first major collaboration, im sure there will be more. Those of you who are still questioning quality, drive a 2000 or newer GM product. You'll shut up real quick. GMs push for better quality control is finally showing through. I have read many magazine reviews of GM products vs. other American or even foreign offerings and they always say how GM's "fit and finish" is so much better.

Different and seperate in a paperwork sense, but one could not exist without the other. How could there be a Daewoo of America if the was no Daewoo of Korea?

The major flaw in your theory, GM doesn't sell cars made by Ford. A more accurate parallel is saying that GM doesn't need to honor Oldsmobile's warranties. We all know what a huge press campaign was made about that.

I believe that the Daewoos sold at GM dealers were Daewoo US products, right? So if that's true, then GM didn't sell Daewoo Korea products. I could be wrong there.

According to the Car and Driver January 2002 issue the Subaru Baha "will be based largely on GM's new Epsilon platform". That's not a review, just one of those "guess what's coming out now" articles. I suppose you could argue that it's not really on a GM platform, cause it only uses some of the Epsilon's components, according to the article. That's an iffy one i guess.

You and Car and Driver are both out of your gourds. The Baja is a Legacy with a truck bed in the back. There's nothing GM about it.

He's exactly right. Body cladding by Pontiac ! How can anyone miss that. I'm just mad that Car and Driver pretty much make fun of the Brat in the article. Funny thing is back in 1982 they RAVED about it for its 4wd system, carlike ride and handiness. How soon they forget about the only Subaru vehicle that has attained any sort of collector status as of yet (fugi rabbit excluded of course).

Whether or not the Baja (and, I would assume, the Legacy) now use parts from the GM bin, it's not based on a GM platform as you claimed. Those of us who took the two-mile tour through the SIA plant SAW Bajas being built, by Subaru, on their own platform.

Of course, some of us also saw penguins.

Since I do not build subarus, i can only go by what i read and hear. I always saw the magazine as a reliable source. Sorry.

Notice they mentioned the "SVX and it's Batman windows" in that article?

I was about to say "If Daewoo made such a great car then why didn't anyone buy them?".

Then I looked out the window at my SVX. :-)
