Oh, there's an idea. And only $80 to boot. Well, we'll see.

How about taking out that dumb shift lock mechanism and mounting the power button where it is on the non-US models?

I don't think anybody knows Cruisen. Nomake was the first to try this mod in the US [at least, that we know of], although it is quite a number of years ago now that the mod was suggested.
Asked to guess, the TCU still has the power map inside, and the gearbox still sends the same signals to the inputs. So I would expect it to work for you. It is actually a very easy thing to try to achieve. Your only problem might be the light. Is yours one of the ones that does not light up on the dash when Power mode is engaged? If so, then you won't know till you drive it if you are in Power mode. Joe

However, keep in mind that in Japan, all models of the SVX had a "Power Mode" switch. As such, this mod should work on all USDM SVXs, including yours. Try it out, see if it changes how your SVX responds. |

You would need to compare the wiring diagrams. Take it that the light won't come on. If you do the mod, you will notice the difference [big time!] in how the car drives. Joe

I noticed on the instrument cluster I got from nextse7en, that there is an "econo" light in the cluster, right next to the "power" light.. Any way to wire up an econo/power type switch, like Toyota had in the 80s? I'll have to get a TCU wiring diagram and see...

Unfortunately, I can't really take a good picture for you. Well actually, one moment, I might have a spare harness laying around here. Yep, I've got one! This pic should be self-explanatory, so I'll just add it to the first post. |

Yeah, I did this on my ebony...definently made a notable diffrence, ESPECIALLY with a 4.11 and a shift resistor. Must say, it is um...Less dailyable because of the aditional mds...but no, it doesnt shift only at a bazillion rpm. It's actually quite civil, seeing as you dnt have to drive like a hoon to engage power. A change in driving habits will easilly negate any gas mileage loss
Yes, I will try this on my 96 in the near future, but when I do, I'll be finding a way to activate the power AND econ lights

The software in the UK/Euro TCU is programmed to engage econ mode when the pin is grounded - unlike the JDM and USA SVXes where it is programmed to engage power mode. The econ light is connected to the econ switch rather than being controlled by the TCU. The light simply indicates that the switch has been pressed.

This would be the correct and elegant way to go about it if you can do so. The Econ light is on the UK ones as well. When you press that button and the Econ light comes on, what it effectively does in the TCU is deny the use of the Power shift map. So in Effect, if Econ is lit up, the Power mode is unavailable. This means that the opposite would apply; If Power was lit up, then Econ would be unavailable too! They are mutually exclusive states of operation. The logical step is to have one switch. When ON, Power mode is activated. When OFF, you have Econ mode working. [Econ mode is the Normal shift map with no accesss to Power on kick-down] Now your problem will be this:I'm not a wiring expert, in fact it gives me nightmares, but SFAIK the Econ switch in the shifter will be of the single pole, single throw type[SPST] To operate two functions you probably need to replace this with a double pole, double throw type of the same size, and run the extra wire to the a4 pin, using the common local ground connection on the transmission tunnel. Maybe Trevor would have a view on it, he's good on electrics? Joe
