British response...

<Saw the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace on TV this morning . . . the band played "The Star-Spangled Banner", which was just unprecedented . . . at the direction of the Queen. Brought goose-bumps and tears to my eyes>

Jean and I watched also, and had the same reaction. People are bringing flowers to the American Embassy, which is just across the street from where I worked for four years;
the same place where I used to watch demonstrations take place on a weekly basis....not by the Brits, but just about everyone else.

Stand-in

< Tell Jean I can't wait to meet her (if she actually does exist)>

Darn. I was just about to hire "Miss April" to stand in for her, expecting to hear..."Boy that SVXphile is one lucky guy!!!" .....but no. I will bring the real Jean with me. That way I get to hear everyone say..."Boy that SVXphile is one lucky guy!!! Don

Talking to Himself...

<Which leads to another question. With whom would a Supreme Being debate? Rebuttal, Mr. SVXphile. Ron

1. Himself.....He's Triune remember?
2. The host of heaven?
3. Sam Donaldson?

Actually, I planned it to read that way....

....of course Jean standing over me, waving her PR-24 had no influence on me at all... Don

<When roused, we are righteous in our outrage, terrible in our force. When provoked by this level of barbarism, we will bear any suffering, pay any cost, go to any length, in the pursuit of justice. I tell you this without fear of contradiction. I know my people, as you, I think, do not. What I
know reassures me. It also causes me to tremble with dread of the future.>

<And take this message in exchange: You don't know my people. You don't know what we're capable of. You don't know what you just started.

But you're about to learn.>
John

This is a wonderful article, thank you for posting it. It is heartening to see the response of the various people on this board, but heart-breaking also, your shock and grief is mirrored over here on this side of the Atlantic.

Could I sound a small note of caution, one people will probably not want to hear in their anger? The phrase "go to any length in the pursuit of justice" is lynch mob talk. When angry people talk of justice they usually mean retribution or revenge, or both. It is difficult to differentiate between innocent or guilty, friend or foe, through a red veil of anger.

America will be aided and supported by the free world in pursuit of the mad bastards who did this. Just be sure that in your righteous anger you deliver a measured response against the real enemy. Don't let the howls for "justice" drown the cries of the innocent in another arena. Much hysteria and anger was vented at totally innocent people after the Timothy McVeigh Kansas City bombing. America does not need to be making this sort of mistake on an international level, or risk losing her status as the Champion of Freedom and Democracy to become as depraved as the terrorist scum who struck the first blow here.

This bin Laden character appears to be prime suspect for this dreadful attack. At least we are being told this by the security agencies who let these suicide bombers through the net, will they get it right this time? There is no guarantee he or his cohorts can be reliably reached or brought to justice. It took two years, two armies and use of a mafia hit squad to find, and kill, Pablo Escobar in Columbia. It is my sincere hope President Bush does not employ a "bread and circuses" strike tactic against some general demonised enemy, just to stay top of the tree back home. The world demands better than that from the leader of the strongest nation.

Kev, awfully sorry to hear of the number of people your company is missing. Please convey our sympathies to those in loss.

Joe

Wisdom

Very wise thoughts Joe. The President has said several times in the last couple of days, that our country must prepare for a long drawn-out conflict with terrorists, so I pray we will not go off half-cocked. Like Pearl Harbor, we will have little opportunity to do very much in the short term, but once we have sized up the problem, we are usually pretty good at getting the job done. I think the lesson of Vietnam is still ringing loud and clear in our ears. The Russians learned a hard lesson in Afghanistan, and I don't foresee us repeating that mistake. Very little of the upcoming struggle is going to be won on conventional battlefields, but by the sort of warfare that our special forces are so well trained to fight. Colin Powell is a thinking-man's General/Secretary of State. I don't see him leading us in some direction that angels fear to tread. At least I hope so. I see one thing that is bothering me already, and that is some, not all but some, of the so-called security measures that have been enacted over the last few days (warships off the coast etc) seem a bit knee-jerk to me, but heck I don't have the knowledge or the responsibility so who am I to say. I think the common sense about which you speak so well, is beginning to take control. The shear MAGNITUDE of trying to find and dig out these slippery characters will, I think, necessitate it. Please continue to pray for the victims families and now, especially, the leadership of our nation. God knows we need guidance from above on this one....
Don

Today the news reports focused on what is really a new aspect of the age we live in - the ubiquitous cel phone.
Heart-rending report after the other of loved ones calling from doomed planes, to say goodbye . . . can you imagine????

Just tears you up . . .

Similar calls from the WTC towers, ending as the buildings collapse . . .

Isn't it one of the FAA regulations that all cell phones are turned off while they are in flight since it interferes with the navigation? Makes me think... Also cell phones can light up gasoline (let alone plane fuel)... [Evil Lwin off]

I think the passengers used the phones provided by the airline.
