BIG Problems....Need Help, Please!
Today my car started to act up. If I am moving (at any speed) and completely take my foot off of the gas pedal, the steering wheel jerks violently to the left. If I have my foot on the gas pedal this jerking goes away. I've only had it a week and a half but I knew both front cv joints were about gone. They clicked to no end while turning and eventually this weekend the clicking became more of a metal clanking/slapping. The PS pump also leaks badly on the engine (needs the o-ring) which I have on order by the Dealer. However, the kid I bought the car from failed to add fluid and it was making some very bad noises until I added some fluid.....now it just whines and leaks. The jerking of the wheel seems to get worse the faster I go (its hard to control the car now) and it will go away if I turn a corner, BUT, it comes back. If I sit still and turn the wheel I hear a click, turn the wheel more, click, etc.... This click is not fast like the cv click was, it only clicks once or so and if I turn the wheel more it will click again.
Anyone have any ideas?? I doubt the problem is related to the cv joints.....I know when they snap the car quits moving (mine still moves)! Please help.....I can't drive the car with it acting like this. Last edited by IwantaSVX; 12-11-2002 at 12:54 PM. |

What if only one of the joints snapped?

Hmmm.....it was explained to me that the SVX had an "open" front differential. I guess when one axle snaps the car quits moving because the power is transferred to the wheel with the least traction. If an axle snaps it will just spin and it will be getting all the power so the car won't move.

Save yourself some headaches and go ahead and replace the axles, you can get rebuilt ones for about $65, and if they go out completely while going 55 or 65 on the highway, could cause excessive damage, possibly even trashing the front diff housing, costing many times more than replacing them now will.
If it is causing the steering wheel to jerk, I wouldn’t drive it till it was replaced.
