TCU Compatibility

Will a 92 SVX Transmission Control Unit work in a 96?

I currently have a 96 SVX with binding issues which i suspect is a duty solenoid issue. However, subaru techs advised it is the TCU. I have a spare and functioning 92 TCU and am interested to know if the 92 TCU is compatible with the 96? Direct swap?

TCU's programs vary depending on the model year. Basically, you should use TCUs of the same model year. In particular, the transmissions are significantly different from the so-called early models of '91-'92 and later models. I don't think it can be used for '92.

I've heard that the TCU program for later models has a change in solenoid operation every year. It seems that the length of the solenoid is different accordingly. This is information that I heard from someone and it is not reliable information.

Furthermore, it should be different for FF and AWD.

Hi mate, your 96 model should be OBD2 the 92 is OBD1 so you will only have problems trying to swap them. The problem is in the C solenoid they have a light pressure spring to return the solenoid piston, that sticks from not much use. Just pull the back off the box in the car and clean the valve piston, not too hard.

As Noriyasu says, they changed the solenoids form NO to NC a few times.

Re: TCU Compatibility

Appreciate the input fellas. Was hoping i could just swap out TCU's, regardless of year, but makes sense.

I am hoping that the TCU harness isn't the issue, I proactively ordered the solenoid c and related gaskets and hoping that solves the binding issue. Will keep all posted.

Re: TCU Compatibility

If you do a bunch of slow figure 8s in a parking lot, it helps a lot with binding. If there is a solenoid issue of course that has to dealt with first.
