ft. axle seal off the transfer case.
Thought I'd change the oil seal on the transfer case..when the axle is pulled off, there is a stub off the transfer case, right ? Can the seal around that be easily "picked" out and what is the part number? The parts stores seem to think I mean the inner hub seal when I talk about what I am looking for.
Thanks for any help...looked at the phatomoku diagram and it shows what I thought was this seal as a "baffle plate" ?? |

Re: ft. axle seal off the transfer case.
I believe it is part #10 on here; http://parts.subaru.com/a/Subaru_199...11-190-01.html
The seal is just pushed in and can be pulled out. It may be easier if you remove the stub. It is held in with a spring ring and can be popped out.

Re: ft. axle seal off the transfer case.
Dave ..thanks. If you know, what is needed to pull out the stub ...just grab it and pry out? Any help on what seal this is under the RockAuto listing..think I know but would like a confirmation.

Re: ft. axle seal off the transfer case.
The diagram gives a SOA part number of 806730032, I searched for that number on Rock Auto and got 2 matches, Timken 223050 and SKF 11636, is that what you got?
To pull the stub, if the axle is removed from the hub but still attached at the trans stub, use the axle like a slide hammer and the stub will pop right out. If the axle is removed, put a punch or screwdriver in the hole that the roll pin goes through and use a pry bar or slide hammer.

Re: ft. axle seal off the transfer case.
Yep, that's what I thought as far as the RockAuto parts. Thanks muchly for the stub axle hints !! Per your thoughts here, I could get the axle and stub lined up out of the car as far the spring pin or is it a pain/impossible to get the stub + axle into the transfer case because of its length/other obstructions?

Re: ft. axle seal off the transfer case.
I tried installing the axle like that once, the axle doesn't work as well as a "push" slide hammer, since then I've used a rubber mallet or block of wood and hammer to reseat the stub, then install the axle the normal way.
It does work that way though, so give it a shot...

Re: ft. axle seal off the transfer case.
Agree....I have found that the CV joints have to much play in them when used as a "drift" to seat the axle.
