Dropping in to say Hi :)
Just playing on the computer today and realized I hadn't been to this site in a very long time (I do keep up with the SVX world via the Facebook groups, which is much easier to digest on a phone, which is all I generally use when not working).
I figured I'd say hi over here in the NW section. I have a lot of fond memories of all the big events we used to do back in the good ol' days when we had a big group and lots of NW activities. So many have moved on (myself included), but good to see a few familiar names still popping up in here. I can't believe it has been 2 1/2 years since I moved down to California and we had our last big cruise back in June of 2012 I believe. I still have my SVX but it's been under a cover in the garage for almost a year now. It started having a bit of transmission quirkiness and I didn't need to really drive it so it stayed close to home. Then it started to exhibit possible headgasket failure symptoms, so now it has really sat. Several months ago I tried to pull it out of the garage and the battery was dead. A replacement battery died after running it around the block a few times and putting it back in the garage. So thinking before anything else, an alternator or other electrical troubleshooting is in order. And then the big stuff. Sigh. Meantime I am enjoying our 2008 Volvo XC90 Sport, an AWD, V8, 7 seat battle tank that can still out accelerate and out corner my SVX. And I just picked up a 2004 Audi S4 Cabriolet, another AWD V8 toy for sunny days. Car life is good, but I still have hopes of one day restoring my SVX. And I sure miss all the SVX owners past and present up there in the Pacific Northwest. Cheers!

Re: Dropping in to say Hi :)
Nice to hear from an oldie. I only attended a few of the functions, but did enjoy the ones that I did go to. I still have 2 svx's, both of which run but are not on the street. I either have the $ and no time, or the time and no $ to get them up and running. I picked up a black 97 that I would really like to cherry up and drive, but we have a couple other wrx's that seem to work as a $$ vacuum.
Hope all is well with you in sunny CA |

Re: Dropping in to say Hi :)
Likewise! I know you only made it to a few events, but it feels like more because of all our email correspondence and "almost made it" back then. 😉
Glad to hear you still have a couple of SVXes in the collection and even have possible "someday" plans. I think at this point a lot of us are in the same boat; we have a SVX (or two, three, etc), but it's not much of a driver or even on the immediate "project car" radar, but we still have a desire to hold on and hopefully do something at some point. The few that are actually driving around recently restored cherry ones are inspiring, if not a reminder of how far some of us have to go. LOL

Re: Dropping in to say Hi :)
Yeah. Besides working every weekend, things seemed to conspire to keep me away from Earls dabob festival. Internal short on rebuilt alternator one year and a range fire the next. Perhaps it's good that I didn't try a third year, looking at the escalating severity of excuses.
Is it even harder to get a car in the road in CA? I read about all the restrictions the state imposes on licensure. I have a half-Alfa that I bought to fix my wrecked spyder that was only in the yard because they couldn't get the mechanical FI to pass emissions. I'm much better at planning than execution. I guess that is why my shop and garage are stuffed with so many parts for projects that will get done when I have the time.... My kids want me to live forever so they don't have to deal with the stash!! It's become a joke about fighting over the inheritance because neither one of them wants my car parts. Guess I should have been enamored with USA muscle cars instead of obscure foreign cars. I'd be better off $$ wise if I had a stash of chevelles and camaros instead of rx7s and svx's. Oh well - it is what it is. |

As far as keeping a car on the road in CA, the challenge for me was facing emissions/smog testing for the first time in over a decade. When we moved out of King County in 2002, I never had to get our cars tested again. Just pay the WA DMV online for tabs renewal once a year, for all they knew the car had 3 wheels, no headlights, and blew black clouds straight from the headers. But when we moved to CA and registered our two cars at the time, they passed fine. My SVX wasn't in the greatest of shape at the time, but it still passed smog and even the minor inspection at the DMV to get registration transferred (that's a one time deal, there is no other inspection beyond bi-annual smog in CA). It's been two years now, so it's time for the SVX to get smogged again, or file as a inop (which would save a small bit of money in tabs and insurance, but I'm not sure the implications for ever getting it back on the road once I do that). It has sat in the garage covered for a year as a few things were acting up this time last year, but I put a new battery in over the weekend and changed out fluids and cleaned MAF, intake, etc. Going to try driving it around a bit this week (it can go about 10-15 mins before overheating) and see if I can actually get it to limp through passing SMOG. Will let you know how it goes. I agree on the muscle car thing. The kids wouldn't be near as worried if you had a shop stuffed full of high value/easy to liquidate USA parts.

Hi Troy
Good to hear from you. The weather here has been very nice this spring. I was just invited to be a Subaru Ambassador from SOA. I accepted the position and will be working more with SVXs.
