Re: svx gutless???? NOT!!!!
Everyone makes valid points, and technology always has a way of winning. With that said, the svx feels torquier than the z4 in the low end, and with the Bontrager swaybar and coilovers it's fun seeing people in your rear view freak out for a second not realizing how sharp the upcoming turns are. . It's still a blast to drive and runs very smoothly for an older vehicle.

Re: svx gutless???? NOT!!!!
All very good points made.
The SVX is haulin' a lot of metal for 220hp. In addition to this quite a few responders have correctly pointed out the auto gearbox as a problem, very much so. It is programmed to change up gears quickly under acceleration. If you study the torque and horsepower curves for the engine you will see that the gearbox in Normal mode denies access to the meatier part of the curves around 4000 rpm. This means that the SVX will feel like a slug for less than manic driving. The Japanese SVXes with the permanent Power mode switch turned on feel a lot more sporty to drive. What Subaru calls Power mode in our cars should more realistically be called Sport mode. BMW auto boxes with this gearbox map name it Sport mode, it makes more sense. It does not provide any more Power, rather it gives access to the more powerful rev ranges of the engine, and in so doing gives a more sporty drive. A 5-speed will allow use on demand of the full 220 horses and will be a quicker SVX to drive. For me the best SVX would have the 4.444 final drive and the permanent Power switch, and I plan to install that in one of my cars. The SVX is fast enough over 100 because of the slippery shape, this is a positive. However, unless you do major changes to the suspension and brakes and alter the very nature of the car, even with a decent gearbox it will still be a GT as Earl mentions. It will be a fast car but not really a quick car. Joe

Re: svx gutless???? NOT!!!!
I used to think my SVX was fast as hell. Until I bought my 2010 RAV4. I love my SVX and it is beautiful but man, when I find the low end torque, I'll let you know.

Re: svx gutless???? NOT!!!!
Well, if you are talking low end grunt it has it's dips. 4500 rpm plus is where it's at IMO. From tickover though, from a standing start it will launch at great pace - very handy. Especially in the wet because it both grips and steers!
I drive my jdm in '3' till I reach about 80mph, and always in the 'power' mode. US model owners maybe ought to try a jdm or UK spec SVX, as the sheer grip available is fantastic for such a weighty piece. I understand the transmission is very different. A twin turbo version would be awesome. I had a Soarer TT briefly, which I suspect had more boost than I reckon was designed to have. So quick it had to go - before it broke! One thing I can confirm is the SVX is no match for an R1 - my oldest lad roasted me last week. Only saving grace is the fact that it is my bike he was on.... |

Re: svx gutless???? NOT!!!!
i had to re-learn how to drive when i got the SVX because i was used to more power and braking.
it did do something my previous car didn't - go anywhere in the snow.

On a separate but topical note, a chick was riding my BEHIND as we merged onto the freeway today, so I went 30mph until the end of the on-ramp and then gunned it up to 70. That Prius fell at least 100 yards behind me until she stepped it to 80 and eventually passed me, with a dirty look SVX > Pruis |

Re: svx gutless???? NOT!!!!
Hi,all:
I've been a little out of it for the past couple of months, but I'm starting to make my comeback. My daughter is driving the Pearlie through our current (mini) heat wave, because I'm still in the convalescent home. But, this thread caught my attention. Try this: Drive from Los Angles to Seattle on the 101 Freeway, and see who gets there sooner. THATS what the SVX is for, not going from 0 - 60 or 0 - 100 faster. And getting to the destination more relaxed than the competition. After all, that's the true meaning of those two little letters: GT. Paul Dexler

Re: svx gutless???? NOT!!!!
The SVX isn't a quick car. In stock form anyway. It IS however, a fast car. There is a difference. From 0-?? it's not anything to write home about. From 50-anything the far side of felonious speeding, its none too bad. But thats not the point of the SVX.

You have to treat your SVX the same way you should treat your wife after you've been married quite a few years.
