Re: This may be the repair on the SVX I'm just not willing to do
Oh sweet baby Jesus!!!
Please do not let this happen to me!!! I am a prime candidate for this to happen - I have been stuck with all the other KNOWN Svx issues!! And mine is a 1992 Aussie model....

Re: This may be the repair on the SVX I'm just not willing to do
hell, i had a 69 pontiac catalina that needed a heater core.
to do the "RIGHT" required removing the hood (2 people minimum) front bumper/grill r/f inner fender all to access a few screws that are otherwise buried (unless u get medieval...which i did!!!)

Re: This may be the repair on the SVX I'm just not willing to do
I just did my heater core last weekend. It really is not as bad as it looks. It is even easier the second time when you realize you forgot to put the bolts back in the metal support bar under the dash and have to take it all back apart. Really, though, the hardest part of the job is forking over the $280 to Subaru for the new heater core. After that you just need patience, a wrench, an extension, a 12mm deep well, a 10mm socket, and a screwdriver.

Re: This may be the repair on the SVX I'm just not willing to do
Wow, I just thought he was gonna say "PCV valve".
(I apologize for that off-topic material; I'd just gotten done duking it out with a bunch of hoses under the manifold.) After seeing those pictures, I can see how the thread title applies... That's a lot of effort. That being said, and in my wish to not take up more space in this thread, I'll say in this edit (in due defense of mechanical engineering types) that Trevor's statement below that begins with "Designers..." is spot on.

Re: This may be the repair on the SVX I'm just not willing to do
Having not long ago replaced my heater core I commiserate.
Designers do not design automobiles. They squeeze things into a package presented to them by artiste types, subservient to the sales department, who keep crying sad for still more bells and whistles, The auto industry should reads a little classic, "The Specialist". This little book covers the correct and exact design of a proper out house, i.e. that which would be completely beyond the auto mob. If you ever see a copy, grab it as it is no doubt of print. P.S. Got me thinking, so asked Mr Google ---- "The Specialist" by Chic Sale" was the reply. I am checking further for the text, as this is THE handbook for all the so called experts.

The artist types are the designers.
The engineers are the ones who pack things into that shell, and make things hard, awkward to get to, with three different fasteners requiring three different tools.

Re: This may be the repair on the SVX I'm just not willing to do
As someone who has installed new airbags I can agree with the horror of having to pull apart that dashboard. There were countless screw to just attach the darn glove box, and getting to the screws in the bottom of the center console is more than a little frustrating. It may be worth paying someone to do. If you don't I suggest bagging and tagging every screw and bolt. I ended up with one or two extras but thankfully the car doesn't rattle so I really don't mind. If you fix it yourself good luck because it must be a long process.

Re: This may be the repair on the SVX I'm just not willing to do
Personally, if my heater core starts leaking, I think ill bypass it and just make a firepit in the pass. floorboard. I have done one on a toyota truck, and that was bad enough. The pics there of the entire dash disassembled gave me a flash headache..... I hope this doesnt happen to me or anyone else

Re: This may be the repair on the SVX I'm just not willing to do
Check out my pictures!!
Yeah I changed mine too, it was a long process but was actually quite easy. The hardest part was ordering the wrong heater core and having someone cut off the rigid pipes and silver solder some new ones on correctly. The good thing was you can get rid of some rattles in your car and give it a REALLY good clean inside. OLD NEW Jordan |

Jordan, what's the pool of green liquid in the rear right footwell? Did you have a leak from the heater or spill a bottle of something?

Re: This may be the repair on the SVX I'm just not willing to do
Hey Joe, when the heater core blows the coolant has to go somewhere! I think the manufacturer took into account that in some part of the car's lifetime the heatercore would blow, so there's little sort of areas where the floor allows puddles of coolant to sit in just in case this happens.
VERY IMPORTANT! if you have suspisions your heater core has blown, don't drive it! The hole is likely to get bigger meaning pulling over to the side of the road. Here's the important part! When the car is angled up onto a towbed all of your coolant will dribble to the rear passengers footwell and will accumulate in a little puddle there just like in my picture, that little puddle is where your ABS computer sits and it will blow if coolant get's in it. |
