Re: Car heater coils and aviability
Got the heater yesterday, here are some pictures.
I'm still not sure whether it's ok or not, it's painted black, and the paint has already come off very easily, it basically seems to already have a couple of nicks or scratches that show what what's underneath which looks like corrosion but I'm not sure if it is corrosion or the colour of the material that it's made out of (copper/brass). The insides of the fixed pipes aren't painted and just look like there's corrosion in them. Would be great if people could please let me know of anything they might see irregular or wrong. |

I might try to get my old one out to compare before you pull your dash.

Re: Car heater coils and aviability
heater core is the proper term, not heater coil.
We ran into this same issue with the gen1 and genII Brats, era 1978-1981 and 1982-1987. The heater core valves for them are avaiable still. I think we are hosed on this for our SVX's.

Re: Car heater coils and aviability
I haven't heard of a heater core problem with the SVX. Usually, they are the result of neglect. Is your coolant is changed every 3yr/36000 miles (or km equivalent?) There may be some kind of manufacturing difference that makes the RHD more prone to failure.

Re: Car heater coils and aviability
SVX has hose to the firewall then it's rigid pipe.
Yeah I'm sure my car's been thrashed, the black plastic piece that the pedal sits on when you put your foot all the way down on the gas has a nice little grove in it from the previous owner putting his foot down a few too many times. I'm sure the coolant had been changed more than once in 3 years, but who knows. Hey Tony if you have it, can I ask you a favour and get you to measure the distance between the two ends of the pipes from the centre of one hole to the centre of the other. Thanks, Jordan. |

Re: Car heater coils and aviability
Guys
I've received a PM from Joe (svxistentialist) about unrelated matters and he explained the situation with the heater matrix and asked if any of my contacts in the motorsport/automotive industry could get some of these heater matrix manufactured. I sent out an email to a couple of companies including Serck Marston enquiring about getting some made, and I've received an reply from Serck (within 10 mins of sending the original email out !!) expressing some interest. What I need now though is some detailed dimentions and photos of the matrix, AUSVX can you measure up the one you have and get me some clear detailed pictures ASAP, or anyone else for that matter. Hopefully we can set something up here and get us all out of a hole !! Phil.

Re: Car heater coils and aviability
Hi guys,
I met with AUSSVX today and he showed me his new Heater Core. From memory it is from Impreza - correct me if I am wrong, Jordan. Snarf, snarf.

Re: Car heater coils and aviability
Kia ora Phil,
I have just replaced the core in my 92 JDM SVX and it appears to be the same as the photos appearing earlier in this thread. Except that mine is of a different style, in that the tubes are attached to the top tank by means of bolt on flanges, necessary because the tanks are of plastic. By contrast the photos appear to show a metal tank, which would be vastly superior. Significantly, it was a hair line crack in the bottom plastic tank which caused my problem. Same thing as the faulty top tank on my radiator, which I have had replaced in aluminium. A very nice job at an economical price. I was able to source a second hand SVX core, which I had severely pressure tested, but if I had known about the possibility of a metal tank, this would have resulted in a more secure solution. Subaru N.Z. quoted around NZ$1,000 for a new tank! The used one was NZ$100. Dimensions of my original and now replaced core:- Overall height including tubes & flanges --- 225 mm. High core only --- 195 mm. Width --- 165 mm. Depth/thickness o/a --- 53 mm. Element thickness --- 46 mm. Distance between tubes at firewall --- 180 mm. Tube diameter --- 15 mm. Overall depth, at right angle to tube ends to angled core --- 280 mm. Number stencilled on bottom tank --- 26529 A1 The tubes angle down slightly to a point level with the top of the core. The foam mounting packing, is much thinner on the SVX core, particularly around the top tank but this would be of no significance. The top plastic tank is white/cream coloured. The bottom, which has rather significantly cracked, black as per the original main radiator material. I think the dimensions will be better than a photo, as the tubes and angles are hard to judge, but appear to be as per the photos already posted. Cheers, Trevor.

Re: Car heater coils and aviability
Thanks Trevor
I've sent the details and the pictures to my contact at Serck. I've got another contact in a local company who make large industrial oil coolers for our Gas Turbine packages, they also have an automotive division locally so I'll give them a call as well and see what they can offer. I'll keep everyone posted as to progress. Phil.

Re: Car heater coils and availability
Reply from Serck :
Good Morning Phil David has passed your enquiry to me and I hope I've been able to come up with something for you. Please see attached excerpt from the catalogue and as far as I can see the heater you are looking for is pretty close to part no 020822. This is a brass tanked heater and the only concern I have is the core thickness as your correspondant suggests it's 53mm which could be a typo or indeed he has measured the tank not the core! Have a look and let me know what you think? The good news is that even if we need to modify an existing part to suit your needs that won't be a problem. Hopefully that's some help. Best regards Sean Serck Services See attachment for diagram of heater matrix : I think it's pretty close to the pictures supplied. The only question then is the dimention of the heater core itself, Trevor could you have mis-typed as I cannot imagine you mis-measured !! This is looking promising guys, so shall I start to make enquiries about costs of single units and/or 10's off ?? How much interest is there for this if we do need to make a minimum order quantity ?? Phil.

Re: Car heater coils and aviability
Hey Phil,
I wonder if Trevor has checked out your tag-line? Great progress man. If these are a good fit, or we can identify which model is closest to our pipes layout, it gives us a re-core option for some years to come. Excellent work. Thanks to all, particularly the boys down under, for chasing up this problem. Joe

Re: Car heater coils and aviability
Kia ora all.
Tank dimension i.e. over all, is 53 mm. Element is 46 mm. I have added this dimension to the original post for good measure. Looks like Part No. 020822 in tube layout and angles. It would appear that this would be a suitable alternative, as the original is packed with foam on all edges and the shortfalls could be easily made up with extra packing. There might be slightly less transfer of heat, but this surely would not validate the making or a special core. It should be possible to decide on suitability, with the other dimensions equating to those I have given confirmed. The unit I have, as I have described, has flanged mounting tubes as per part no. 020848, but this is of no concern.. Looks good to me. Trevor. Quote:

Re: Car heater coils and aviability
Hi Trevor
Thanks for the update, I have passed this on to Sean at Serck for comment. Looking at the pictures of the heater matrix's (not sure on the plural of matrix !!) Serck have sent us, comparing with your dimensions, and bearing in mind your description of "flanged pipework mountings" would the Serck part number 020848 not seem a better match ?? The overall dimension is closer at 200mm rather than 195, the core depth is 48mm which is closer to your measured 46mm, and if the pipework is indeed flanged fitting as you describe this part seems closer to me than the other, which I assume is in fact the Imprezza heater matrix ?? I have asked Sean about purchase prospects, specifically: whether I can have one "on trial" so to speak, whether they will entertain very low order numbers (less than 10) or whether we will have to place a minimum order quantity, and what the likely unit costs are going to be. Hopefully he will get back to me soon with this info. Best regards Phil.
