Re: Diff Removal
yes drop the exhaust, and take the tranny and front diff out together. be sure to prop the engine up when you take the tranny and everything out. take your time and keep it clean....
my first time doing it was on the ground in dec and jan. it was colder than heck and took me a long time. good luck Bobby |

Re: Diff Removal
I don't think you need to drop the exhaust. Doing so would make differential removal easier but I find the exhaust to be a pain by itself.
If you pull the left axle by disconnecting the trailing arm, lateral links, etc. you could get by without messing with the exhaust. I pulled both axles by that method for seal inspecting but didn't actually remove the carrier. Link to rear diff pdf Here's what I did minus carrier removal: 1. Unbolt the left side trailing arm, lateral links, stabilizer link, brake hose clamp, and parking brake clamp so the axle may be pulled on from the hub. A couple yanks should pull it out. Now do the same for the right side. 2. Unbolt the drive shaft from the yoke. 3. Unbolt the carrier and remove. The suspension bolts can be a real bear but that's where some pb blaster and an impact wrench come in handy. Some might say just drop the exhaust and pry the axles loose. I first removed my rear diff using the pry bar method only and it was so frustrating... Never again. |
