Cheney prods Senate to extend surveillance law

In the face of impeachment, he presses on.

Quote:
WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney prodded Congress on Wednesday to extend and broaden an expiring surveillance law, saying "fighting the war on terror is a long-term enterprise" that should not come with an expiration date.

...
Administration allies in Congress not only want the expiring law made permanent but amended to give telephone companies and other communications providers immunity from being sued for helping the government eavesdropping and other intelligence-gathering efforts.

...
The original FISA law requires the government to get permission from a special court to listen in on the phone calls and e-mails of people in the United States. Changes in communications technology mean many purely foreign to foreign communications now pass through the United States and therefore require the government to get court orders to intercept them.

The Protect America Act, adopted in August, eased that restriction. Privacy and civil liberties advocates say it went too far, giving the government far more power to eavesdrop on American communications without court oversight.

As Usual

As usual things are misrepresented and /or taken out of context. I think a little research is in order to determine actually what is wanted and what the law would include. I don't have any problems with eavesdropping on foreign suspected terrorists myself. Again this is not a domestic surveillance program. Remember one end of this communication has to be in a foreign country and involve a suspected or known terrorist.

"The law, which authorizes the administration to eavesdrop on e-mails and phone calls to and from suspected terrorists, expires.............."

Actually, I WANT AND EXPECT my government to protect me from these foreign suicidal lunatics.

So just because your phone calls are boring you'd willingly give up your privacy?

That may be the intended use, but you seem to forget the governemnt has the ability to label anyone it sees fit a "terrorist", even if they are not from other countries, even if they have not actually committed a crime.

Yeah, and so far big G has done a real smash up job of protecting people, failing at every turn.

To me, YOU are the lunatic, placing so much faith into a broken system.

MY problem here is they are trying to CIRCUMVENT established protocol. They are trying to act outside the law. That's called vigilanteism.

I suppose you are ok putting your life in the hand of vigilantes?

What a picture--seeing a skinny little guy getting whacked by a .50 Cal--not the business end, but the recoil end.

And again---you ignore the fact that one end has to be in a foreign country as either the originator or recipient--besides the suspected terrorist aspect.

Show me the part that says "one end has to be in a foreign country".

The Desert Eagle doesn't have nearly as much kick as I thought, either.
I don't own one but I did get to use one last month, among other things.
It's on video, but I don't think I need to prove anything to you.

Oh look, a related article.

"Senate rejects more oversight of phone spying"

Quote:
WASHINGTON - The Senate granted at least a temporary victory to the White House on Thursday, turning back an attempt to increase court oversight of the government's surveillance of phone calls and e-mails that involve people inside the United States.

I must admit I know very little about guns and ammo and their designations.

I was anti-gun until a couple years ago.

I was a lot of things a few years ago that I am not now. Weird, huh.

Like I have said, you not only don't read things correctly but you also report them in this forum inaccurately.

Oh, by the way the law extending AND even broadening the phone and email monitoring has passed and been signed by the president.

And yes, it does require one end of the communcation to be in a foreign country.
