Salary Negotiation
OK, so I just had my 3rd interview for a position I am really looking forward to getting.
At this point, I figure all I am waiting on is an offer letter. I was told when I gave them my current salary that it was on the bottom of the scale for what they are looking to pay. I am guessing that with my experience that I will be offered above the minimum. Two questions. How large is a range "typically" for a salaried position? $10k? I have no idea. I have also never really bartered with my salary before, but I feel like this will be my first opportunity to do so. Any tips on how to go about this? I 'should' receive an offer letter by the end of next week. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

RSVX, Is this a position in a different company, or the same one?
Will you be moving to get it? In my experience, the grade of the position denotes pay, if you are moving from another dept, HR will typically limit your raise to about 12% If you are interviewing for a position in another company thats another story, I would request at 20% bump from your current position (plus cost of living increase if you are moving) Its a negotiation, they will come at you with an offer, thats your queue to come back higher. Expect to meet at around 50% of the difference between what they offer, and what you ask for. They are expecting that. -Patrick

Its a new position, with a new company, only in my local area.
It will be a bump up in responsibility. It was also noted to me that this will be a 3-4 person team, and that once that team is in place, they want the strongest member to manage/lead the team. So there is almost a chance for immediate (6 months at least, I am guessing) advancement.

Have you Googled your position or job type based on zip code? You can see what the low and high is for your area and compare that to other areas to see what the pay scale is in relation to property values, thus negating what you should be asking for. I found this useful in the past. Good luck.
Oh, and if they want you they will give you an offer. This means that what they offer you is what they want to budget you at, but they can allways spare a couple of bucks. Which is evident in them entertaining the idea of employing you verses another. Know what you are worth and then strive for a little higher because someone else out there is getting paid more than you for the same job, always.

Yeah, the title leaves a bit to be desired, but I have an idea of the range, just looking for tips over all. Never really had an opportunity like this.
