I think the difficult part is getting the piston into the rubber boot as it is a tight fit.

99cent Caliper Piston shoehorn.......
hey Earl..
ive rebuilt my Calipers twice in 270k miles. They sell a caliper seal Kit..subaruparts.com.....basic process as follows; 1. remove caliper and use air compressor with rubber nozzel to force out pistons (i put a 3x folded over shop rag in caliper to absorbe pistons popping out...GO slow with air can be DANGEROUS...when pistons pop out. 2. Replace the seals, boots etc. clean and lube pins and coat inside of pots with some dot4. 3.To get the pistons back is a PITA....SOlution: Get a 99cent plastic spice bottle(w spice of ure choice and cut of BOTH ends to get a cylinder. Then cut lengthwise..(see fig. ) sorry about noob paint skills 4.Cutting lengthwise will allow u to slip the spice bottle into pot and then drop/guide in piston.....works like a charm........ 4.5 Note; put on new boots onto caliper First without pistons....then use shoehorn to stretch boot and guide piston in.... 5.Reassemble and bleed Brakes and u are good for 100k or so.... Ps while your at it u should Paint the Calipers and rotor hubs Black(high temp paint.......looks nice.....

I actually installed the boots on to the pistons, then droped them both in together. This works fine with the front calipers only. The rear calipers have a retaining ring that needs to be installed with the boot before droping in the piston.
How come on your drawing you have the seal on the piston? The seal goes on the inside of the caliper. The groove in the piston is for the boot to hold on to. PS. I also painted the calipers while I was doing the over haul, this is the best time to do it. Last edited by dannmarr; 07-05-2007 at 03:31 AM. |

I actually like your method. Too bad I read this after I did my calipers. The rears were difficult because the boots have to go on first and trying to hold the boots open while droping in the calipers are a PITA.

replace pivot pin
Quote:
nice pic Just did the seals in my front calipers not to hijack this thread but any help with a caliper rattle over gravel and small bumps The noise stops when I apply the brakes so I'm pretty sure it's the upper pivot pin on the mounting bracket lots of up and down play called the dealer and the pin is $10 and the bushing $18 If I replace the pin I should replace the bushing also How difficult is it to drive that thing out of the caliper? Never done one on any of my other subes?

The caliper should slide right off the pin. It could be frozen, then you'll need to use some WD40. The top pin is screwed into the caliper bracket. It comes out with an open end wrench. The boot can be reused if it's not damaged. Use silicone on the pin when you slide the caliper back on. Make sure it's the top pin that needs replacing, it can also be the bottom screw that's not screwed in properly. Check my locker for a photo of the top pin.

Dannmarr - were you drinking, or did you just have problems with the focus?
