update
Ok juast as an update, yeah i know its been awhile but i think what the mechanic said was that the bushings in the rear diff failed. causing too much heat, and igniting my underbody or the oil from my oil leak. Oh yeah they said they think there is a gas leak as well. That was news to me!! HMMM maybe thats why can only get about 350 miles per tank. . . . .
Thanks all for helping |

The most important thing to come out of this, is there looks like there is a fuel line on the SVX, that can leak to cause a fire. Three that we know of. Thanks for posting the results, it could save a life. Harvey.

There is cow dung, but it is the opposite gender stuff that your mechanic and adjacent others use to slide away from real facts. Sadly the honest are usually the losers.

WTF?
Harvey, I think you may have misread cookie's post. It wasn't the leaking fuel line that caused the fire. The fuel lines are under the back seat and routed inside the passenger compartment - nowhere near the rear diff. The problem on these three cars seems to have been that their rear diffs overheated, to the point that the seals melted and the diff oil ran out and ignited.

Overheated diff????????????
Phil, in all the years that I have been working with autos, I have never seen a fire caused by a gears or bearings. I have seen diff gears heat to the point of welding together, but not set the seals or oil on fire.
This has intrigued me since the first one. I would have suspected the hand brake being left on, to start a fire at the hubs, but can't see a binding gear or bearing doing that. I mean the noise from a diff that was that bad, would be horrendous. Something else started the fire. Harvey.

Surely in view of your qualified experience you must have an existing theory to back such a definite statement in order to make it viable and be accepted against that proposed by Phil. ? However I do agree that detective work is the order of the day. Edit P.S. N.B. The original post described "dripping fire". Surely this indicates a less volatile liquid than petrol. With the car in motion and the added supply of oxygen, coupled with degree heat possible from two metal surfaces in a high level of friction and surface speed, diff oil is a feasible combustible. I am old enough to remember the principals involved in makeshift waste oil heaters, as constructed by soldiers during wartime.
