SVX which Model/year
Hi folks I am new to the forum and will be purchasing an SVX in the not too distant future, so I have a couple of questions.
SVX's are available in New Zealand as used Japanese imports and are mainly 91 to 95 models. What year/model is the preferable, What options are desirable to look out for ? I have read the transmission and wheel bearings are fragile so when I am test driving what will be noticeable if these problems are apparent. A qualified mechanic will no doubt be able to find serious problems if any, but before I have a pre-purchase vehicle check it would be handy to know of tell tale signs. They are fantastic looking cars and and My trusty Subaru Legacy GT will have a big Brother soon! Cheers |

Japanese models were as follows;
'91-'93 VE and VL. The VL has leather seats and 4 wheel steering. Both models have the black roof and 'fake' wood interior. '93-'94 S40. This is 'cheap' version of the VE and has grey dash panels. Only 300 made. '94 S40II. Basically same as S40 and only 300 made. '95 S3. Same as S40 and S40II but with BBS alloy wheels. 500 made. '96-'97 S4. This was the last model, dash panel reverted back to the 'fake' wood and it has chrome front grille. Best model was the S4 as all the 'problems' had been sorted. But only 500 were made. My next choice would be a late VE model. I would keep clear of the VL model, 4WS can be problematic/expensive to fix and most VLs were made in '91 and early '92 so had the early transmission problems. Hope this helps.

I advise him to get either a 94 or a 95. Better for Mods later on..

Best?
I agree that the 96-97 is by far the best unless you are just dying to mod. Then a 95 would be the choice. The 92 and 93 and early 94 have a lot more problems.

Rightttttttttttt!!!
Right you are Earl----I think this is one area we definitely agree on. Acceptable mods to me are brakes, cooling (engine and/or tranny) and maybe suspension tweeks at stock height.

Thanks for the info
The general consensus seems the later models are better, There is a few for sale on a NZ site www.trademe.co.nz , check them out. I will have a look at a few of the cars in Auckland on the weekend and will let everyone know if I have any luck.
