Outer CV boot change.. info required
Hi all,
I am planning to work on changing my front passenger outer CV boot as soon as I get my car shipped to here. Meanwhile i want to know if anyone have any how-to write-up and a place where I can get the parts for low cost. I would like to know any SVX members in and around San Rafael, CA . -Pavan |

Just did mine... not worth the trouble
I just changed an outer CV boot on my SVX. Doing so requires removal of the axle and then carefully disassembling and removing the INNER cv joint to get the new boot on the outer joint. Both joints have to be thoroughly cleaned and carefully repacked with grease before reassembly. Then there is the issue of securing the boot clamps which often can't be done without a special boot clamp tool. The boot only cost me $15, but the joint still clicks occasionally after I reassembled it, even though it looked good after I cleaned and inspected it. A rebuilt axle from AutoZone was $69 plus a $60 core charge for your old axle- money I didn't have at the time but will probably end up spending anyway. Do yourself a favor and go with a rebuilt axle from the start.

So its like, I have to go to say autozone and buy the rebuild axle for $69, come home replace the old one with this new one and then go back to autozone to return it and get $60 back? or should I have to pay $129 at first and then when i return the core they will refund me $60?
Just want to make sure about the core return. Do some one have like a small write-up or atleast pics of replacing it? -Pavan |

A "core charge" is money you pay up-front and then you get it refunded when you bring your old one back, so yes, you're paying $129 and then getting $60 back. (I'm not positive on the exact prices, so don't quote me on that) You can look up the part on the AutoZone website at www.autozone.com.

Or better yet, just take out your axle BEFORE you go, so you can just exchange it when you pick up the new one...then no Core charge to pay, and only one trip to the parts place....
Don't forget to remove the dust caps off the axle to install on the rebuilt one...

FYI: If anyone is thinking about going to their local Advanced Auto, the one and only one listed on their in store system may not be correct. There are a few more choices on the partsamerica site, but no guarantees on whether they're correct either. Mine came with a slightly different outer end and causes the end of the shaft to protrude about 2 inches past the end of the hub and has different threads than the OEM as well as a 36mm nut. They are ordering me another one just in case this one was a fluke, so we'll see what happens.
