Tell me what I'm looking at
I just got my car back from the dealership after an extensive timing belt, cam seal, valve cover seal, water pump/oil pump replacement and they did a good job, but I notice another small leak coming from somewhere under the car.
I layed under the car attempting to wipe things down and I took some pictures and hoping someone can tell me what they think is still leaking. It appears to me that some oil makes it's way down to the cross member....it's not a fast leak, just an annoying one. I think the back of the oil pan shows some signs of leakeage, but is there a seal or gasket where the transmission meets the engine or thereabouts? What's the normal leaker in the back side of the engine?... What's the hose in the pic oil5.jpg? Some oil appeared at the end of that fitting, but wasn't noticeably dripping. |

I think perhaps you ripped either the CV or Steering rack boot. You could have broke the steering rack. Does that smell like ATF or regular crank oil?
Also, rear seals leak as well.

leak
if its oil, it could be coming from the separator plate in the back of the engine. if its ATF, then it might be a power steering line. how much did the dealer charge for the work they did?

The hose with clamp in pic 5 is the power steering return line. I'd change that first since it is the cheapest to fix.
Dry everything up after changing it and check again. By the looks of the drip on the head of the bolt in one of the pics, it is reddish fluid = ATF - which could be from the power steering or tranny but in that area most likely from the power steering.

I swear none of the fluid was reddish colored, all black/dark brown.....but I would agree with you on the power steering return line. As for price for the work....It was over 1500 which I had saved up for, but they fixed everything I had instructed them to...I didn't have them do anything with the back of the engine and I didn't have them do anything with the P/S pump or lines.
Now this seperator plate, is that the piece with the gear teeth on it as in one of my pics...kind of has a rusty color to it?? Does anyone have the part numbers of the seals/gaskets that go to the back of the engine where I may be seeing additional oil? Here's another question: Does old ATF fluid ever appear brown or black incase it wasn't changed in awhile?? |

all valve cover (rocker) seals, washers, cam and crank seals, timing belt, aircompressor belt, timing belt idlers, waterpump and seals, oil pump and seals, thermostadt, new timing belt cover.....so that has been my "big service" since owning my car so far.
They relubed the chasis and changed the oil, obviously as well. |
