4EAT overhaul
I've lost gears 3 and 4, so I need a rebuild or an overhaul. Costs too much for the shop to re and re, so I'm going to do it myself. I can buy a master overhaul kit with frictions and steels and extras, from MakCo or IPT Performance, for between $300 and $500 but before I do, I thought it would be wise to check with more experienced SVX mechanics.
Can you recommend a better source for an overhaul kit? Any advice is welcome? Scott |

Sorry to hear you lost your tranny. I was wondering if you still had the car. I am currently driving my 92 teal around town. Maybe we can meet up again. Unfortunately I can't help you on rebuilding advice but good luck.

the only thing I will ever say against doing it yourself because my dad did his and you needed a 5 ton press to squish it all back togheter, at least on a GM 700r4 (4speed auto) he used a car lift at work. and if all else fails thats how he explaind it to me

Yeah, if you've never done this yourself before I don't recommend learning on this one.
You could probably find a used 4EAT w/matching rear diff from another Subaru for cheap.

I'm surprised you can find the parts that cheap. When mine died a couple years ago, I asked a friend of the family about rebuilding mine. He said he'd do it for me for the cost of parts, and that was still $1500. Possibly that rebuild was more comprehensive than you'd be doing with thoseparts kits you looked at.
I ended up buying a used SVX tranny. Maybe some day I'll rebuild my old one, but since I cannibalized it for parts for my wife's Legacy, I doubt it.

Don't forget there may be more wrong than what the parts kits contain. Typically they include the friction and sealing parts with bands and sprags being extra. If you have other internal damage that has to be added on top, whether you use new or used parts.

Thanks for the cautions, but I'm comfortable with smaller jobs, and even if I totally screw it up, I'll only be out a few hundred dollars and be back where I am now.
I'm not so foolish to think I know everything, so I'm tapping the wealth of experience on this marvelous network for some practical tips on doing this job. Anybody? |

Thanks Beav. You're right about the extras.
Makco sells a Master Rebuild kit (#93008) for about $240. Bands and sprags are extra. IPT sells a kit that includes everything for $550. It is for a Subie 4EAT, but it does not specify SVX, so I'm not 100% sure it is exactly the same as Outback. Can anybody recommend a specific rebuild kit for SVX? |

What I'm getting at is there are many parts that can go bad that are not included in ANY kit. Drums, bearings, shafts, gears, etc. Busy tranny shops have an edge by saving many used parts over the years. National chains overprice their work to cover potential overruns - to a point. Smaller independent shops quote low with a caveat - there may be hidden damage that will run the price up after a tear-down and inspection.
I guess what I'm trying to tell you is to tear it apart first then decide if it's worth buying a kit.
