I just had my windshield replaced.... they used the "regular" one, ordered through the dealer.
I like it for 2 reasons: 1 - it was cheaper.....(hence, no increase in insurance premium) 2 - my garage door opener works a hell of a lot better! therefore, my radar detector should as well......

Your first task is, indeed, to trash your radar detector....Whistler isn't the best one around. Not only is it not all that sensitive, it radiates enough radio interference on its own to let Officer Bob Speed know you're coming. Spend the bucks ($399) and get a Valentine One...not only is it FAR more sensitive, it tells you which direction the scan is coming from, and more importantly, it does so without sending out enough spurious radiation of its own to broadcast your arrival. The Valentine One was invented by the same guy who did the legendary Passport and Escort while working for someone else. Car and Driver has tested detectors several times and the Valentine always comes up the winner. I used an old Passport for years and never had any trouble with detecting radar at a distance (assuming it wasn't the "instant-on" variety), and I just clamped the thing to the cowl over the instrument panel. Second, welcome to the world of "instant-on" radar. In an effort to defeat detectors, radar manufacturers have, for years now, made radar systems that don't actually transmit until Officer Bob Speed aims it at you and pulls the trigger. Unless he happens to be checking some other unfortunate soul ahead of you, and your detector catches some of the over-splatter, you're nailed before you have a chance. In a high-traffic area where lots of dirvers are being checked, a good detector will give you a bit of warning, but if it's just you and Smokey, you're cooked. Third, no brand of radar detector will do you any good in the presence of LIDAR, a laser-based speed measurement system that is essentially an "instant-on" system using infrared light instead of radio frequencies. Fourth, have you considered observing the speed limit? ;^) |

Well, I have to say the reason I even ended up going so fast was someone was going under the speed limit and I tried to pass them. Its was ironicly one of the least fast passes I've ever made, only bringing it upto about 3-4k. But when I was halfway through the pass and becide the other persons car, another car peaked around the corner at the end of the passing lane so I had to speed up the finish the pass safly. There was a car behind the one coming in the distance. It was the SWHPD Ford Explorer. And just my luck it was the same cop who gave me 2 warnings in the past (6 months ago) in my old SVX. No other cop has ever pulled me over. I was even nice to him. He never had to turn on his lights. I knew he was going to pull me over. But he was just a dick and handed me a ticket and had the nerve to ask me if I had anti-aircraft weapons and if he could search my car. I said no obviously.
I really don't even know if I was going 52 like the cop said. I did not think I was going that fast. But either way, I talked to the police chief and we are friends. I'm contesting the thicket and he will be at the court. He said they like to strike deals before the hearings usually but he could not promise that obviously. And I ended up selling the detector to my dad who wanted it and using the money to buy a Stage I chip for the car. Edit, and yes. They do have instant on now. When I was talking to the police chief he told me that they can track more than one car now. And choose to detect cars pulling away, coming at them, cars behind them, etc. This is another reason why I got rid of that supid detector. It would be useless. Their radar is as bad as laser, which thankfully is not around here. Oh, and I have slowed down a bit since this little incident. The only other reason I ever went fast was just to keep the TC locked for good MPG. Although I got 18.4mpg this time insted of 19.9 when I moved around a bit quicker its better than a $210 fine. And hopefully stage one will help a bit with the MPG.

Boys and girls...
I used to have radar detector in my car. Does it work? Yes to a degree. Then cops in IL started to use a lot more Laser than X/Ka band radar. With the laser, you might be able to jam it but chances are slim. You have to beat the speed of light bouncing off to beat it. I have my radar detector "warning" me about the laser before. By then it's too late anyhow. The best detector is your eyes and your brain. Look at a typical traffic pattern and look for hills, on/off ramps, bushes etc. That's where they hide all the time. And *knocks on wood* I have not had a single speeding ticket for about 4 years now.

I still have my old Passport, but I rarely use it because many of the state cop cars, and some of the locals, here in upstate New York are equipped with laser (and there's at least one who patrols the Interstates around here who has LIDAR installed in a Camaro). |

a local shop sell a hard wire jammer Laser and rader. that mounts 5 jammer pods in your car 3 in the front bumper and two in the back. i tested it out with a cop friend and the shop owners car and it gets a blank reading every time. i think its expencive but it has a warrenty to pay the cost of the product and the ticket if it doesn't work. it also pops popcorn.

No speeding ticket since the day before Nick was born, 14+ years ago!!!
I'm knocking on wood as we speak. There was an article in Road and Track, I belive, that showed that Laser, at that time can be "fooled" by other sources of light. Like leaving your halogen fog lights on. With your lights on, it took the Officer 3 times as long to get a good reading. If ANYONE here remembers the article, or has it please jump in. Thanks, Tom |
