tranny cooler filter
I have a '92 SVX with the tranny cooler installed. The system looks fairly old and do I need to replace the filter for the tranny cooler system? If so, which filter is it and is it just a simple spin on spin off as it appears? What is the suggested maintenance for the system?

If the filter is installed under the battery and looks about the size of a short oil filter, then it's probably the factory filter, which is not a spin on. If you do a search there have been a couple of posts about the possibility of buying a same/similar filter made for the Imprezza (I think). I don't think Subaru intended the filter to be replaced, but a cautious attitude would say change it every 50K miles.
If the filter is attached to an aluminum casting, with the fluid lines going in/out of that, then you probably have an add-on aftermarket filter. There's no sure way to tell what/which filter that system uses short of taking it off and matching - although the most popular size is the Fram equivalent to a PH8A. Caution - transmission generally generate more pressure (PSI) than engine oil systems. Don't buy a cheap filter (like Fram) for this application (filter could actually burst open). Autozone sells the Mobil 1 filter for about $10 - it has been tested to have very high burst pressure, alternately look for a K&N or Bosch filter. |

Gid'ay Lee, don't worry about the pressure in the cooling circuit. This is regulated to about 10 psi. The other difference in the filters, is because of the low pressure, the filter needs to be a course one, designed for this purpose. An engine oil filter is too fine, this restricts the flow of cool oil that is used to lube the gears. Harvey.

This is the part# for the Legacy filter kit: 31099AA091
$9.53 at subaruparts.com The filter is the same, but the mounting hardware and hoses are different. I just bought the Legacy kit and used that filter and threw the rest out because the filter sells for $40+ by itself!!!!

Kind of, the campaign filter for the SVX requires you to give them your VIN so they can see if you already have it. This is the filter for the Legacy because the Legacy "campaign" does not require a VIN.

All I want to do is change my SVX campaign filter. The filter that comes with the Legacy kit you described is an exact replacement? thanks, dcb |

Yes the Legacy AFT filter that comes in the kit is the same as the SVX AFT filter.

Let's see... $40+ for the filter if you say it's for an SVX (I was quoted $50 by an on-line source) versus $10+ for the same item with hardware if ordered for a Legacy. Geez, that bites. dcb |
