New tyres
I have recently been searching this site for 'tyres' and nothing came up, so I thought that it was about time we had a proper tyre thread.
It would appear that the most popular in the US are the AVS dBs and Conti extreme contact. After a good deal of hunting I have found thad the AVS dBs have only recently come to Europe and I couldn't find the Contis at all. On www epinion.com both are listed as 'all season' so this could be why. I have now decided to get new Yokohama AVS Sports as a rather expensive experiment. These are meant to be high performance summer tyres, but should just about cope with Guernsey winters too. They should be on in time for the meet so I will be able to give them a good test. The manager of the tyre wholesalers in the UK has an SVX and swears that the correct tyre size is 205 70R16 and that we all have it wrong. I bet he has good 0-60 times though!!

I just bulged my left front tyre again in a pothole, so I understand what he means.
Andy, 205 by 70 is a way taller tyre, the profile is not so low. Correct size for mine is 225 by 50. His 0 to 60 times would have to lengthen, his overall gearing would be higher. Joe

Andy,
I don't know how international trade agreements work. But if Canada and the Gurnsey Islands are part of the British Commonwealth, would it not be less expensive for you to order the Conti Extreme Contact or Yoko AVS dB-S2 tires through Canada and have them shipped to you? I have another tire for you to look into. It is on my '97 SVX. It is the Dunlop SP-5000-AS (assymetrical). It is considered an ultra-high performance tire in the same category as the Conti & Yoko. While they are not rated as high as the Conti EC's in snow; they are very, very good handling in rain and dry, plus they stick like glue around the turns. After approx. 5000 miles they are running more smoothly and are a bit quieter then when they were new. However they are slightly nosier as the original Yoko AVS dB's. The owner surveys on the Tire Rack site said they had a very long break-in period. They do have the weirdest tread pattern that I've ever seen on a tire. I don't know if you get alot of snow in the Gurnsey Islands. I can tell you from experience (lots of snow last winter) that these Dunlops are alot better than the original Yoko AVS dBs. I thought that the Yokos were a bit scary in the snow. I considered their snow performance to be marginal at best. The correct tire size for the SVX is: 255-50/R-16. Good Luck.

Since this is a tire thread, I thought that I'd post this question here.
My wife's 94 SVX, "Pearly", has Yokohama A-540 tires on it. I cqan't find anything on these tires. Apparently Yoko does not sell them anymore. Does anyone here have any experience or data on these tires that they can share? I drove her SVX to & from work yesterday. I was impressed with these tires . I would characterize them as high perfrmance touring tires, from looking at the tread pattern.

Larry, We have about 1/2 inch of snow every 10 years so pure summer tyres are probably the best here. Do they even sell AVS Sports in your area? I have seen the Dunlop SP 5000s but they are too expensive here. I have attached a picture as they might have a different name in your area.

Until recently we've always used Pirelli P6000's bought off the internet for about £85-90 each. It's a good tyre, but IMHO a little noisy.
Recently we bought 4 Falken ZE 512's for £65 each and so far I'm very impressed. They grip well in dry and wet, are less noisy than the Pirelli's and even have a little rubber lip to protect the alloys from curbing (although it's a little late in our case). I'd definitely recommend having the same tyre all round. At one time we had Pirelli's on the front and JDM Dunlop's (imported with the car) on the back. The back end used to go sideways in the wet - we had to run the back ones at a slightly lower pressure, to avoid going backwards off every roundabout. I can't think of any logical reason for it, that's just the way it was. Replacing the rear tyres fixed the problem. Phil. |

Andy,The AVS Sports in your locale are the same as the ones over here. PS: The OEM tire size for the SVX is still 225-50R16 now matter how many times you type 205. The 1997 SVX has a different size but I have fitted 225-50R16 tires on it.

For over two years now I have been using Sava Rapidex 225x50 R16. They cost me 110Euro fitted and balanced, that would be less than a hundred dollars each, approx £76 Stg. They are great in the wet, grippy in the dry, and best of all, the quietest I could find, so I am sticking with them. Joe

Yokohama made them exclusively for Sears so that's the only place you'll find them. Some Sears may still have them in. I found them to be a decent tyre (aka tire) but very noisy. I replaced them with Dunlop SP5000 which my research said would be the best all around for summer/winter use. So far I really like them. I know you also have (had) them on your '97.

They are a cheap tyre, along the lines of Hangkook or Falken. They happen to suit the car, at the right money, so I am happy with them. I am told they are made in the same factory/ by the same people as Semperit. Don't know if this is true, don't care either, they do the business. Joe

I can thoroughly recommend Toyo Proxes T1S having used them on my 1990 Porsche 911 (964) which wears 225/50/16 on the rear axle. They are not a particularly well known brand but are standard fit on TVRs - they are not a 'budget' tyre. Many Porsche and Impreza drivers choose them too.
A pair cost me £188 a few months back from Capital Tyres in Weybridge, a small business but highly recommended. Roly |

There is actually a number of posts, maybe 100, maybe 200, I am not sure. Also, there may be a time limit, when the system measures against your start date, but not sure on this either. You can get in and change your appellation by clicking on user cp bar above. Many people do this. You can now be Grand Master Superbus Bickus Dickus, if you feel in the mood for it, or Junior Member grates a little. Go on, you know you want to do it! Joe
