So I got my SVX finally...And have a few problems.
If anyone could please help me, I'd really appreciate it. Bear with me because I'm probably going to be horrible at describing the things I found:
1. a buzz sound when the RPM hits the line before the 2...It only happens at this point. 2. a squeaking sound while driving...sounds like when you scrape your sneakers on a school floor. 3. a sound under the car that sounds like something metal is dragging on the ground and about to fall. I'm sorry...I'll try and be more specific if anyone replies, but I lack technical knowledge. Any suggestions are appreciated. (Didn't hear any of these things yesterday when I test drove it.) |

1) It's a common problem with the heatshield that rattles under your car. If you have money you could purchase the Euro resonator from stebro to get a nicer sound a little more power or you can have someone take out the heatshield, but some people dont recommend it.
2) Is it making the squeaking sound when you're constantly moving, turning or stopping? Need a little more info to answer that one. 3) Is the metal scraping only occuring around turns? It could possibly your brakes maybe? Need a little more info. Good luck! Hope i helped a little.

1) The rpm buzz I mentioned has to do with the heatshield? I'm confused. How much is a resonator?
2) The squeaking is when you're constantly moving. I had my boyfriend park the car tonight. He drove up the street and it was constantly going "squeak.........squeak" every couple seconds. 3) The metal scraping is constant, but can't be heard when you drive at a faster speed. It makes me nervous. It sounds like something is going to fall, but nothing is hanging down. Supposedly the brakes are okay, but I don't know when they were done...Never knew brakes could make that sound. Thanks for helping. |

Sorry I didnt mean to be too technical. The heatshield is basically underneath the car on the middle catalytic convertor that can come loose over time. The engine vibration caused it to rattle. The Euro resonator is expensive at $200, I'm not sure how much the OEM one is.
The squeaking and scraping sound I'm not sure. I'm not really mechanically inclined, but I had a scraping noise around turns that went away the next day.

Are you sure that the buzz sound is caused by that? It's weird because it sounds like it comes from the dash, but you definitely would know more than me. So a resonator isn't really necessary is it? Because if that buzz around 2 rpm is harmless, I don't think I'd buy a resonator, esp. because I'm broke from buying the car. hehe.
Hm, I hope the squeaking goes away on mine, too. Thanks, again. |

Hmm, it generally is the heatshield on the resonator, can you hear it when the windows closed or outside the car?
Mine actually does that now when I first start the car and the idle's at 1500 rpm and goes away, but if I rev the engine up it'll return. Try having someone outside of the car and another in the car and just stick your head right under the door and rev the engine up to 2000 again and see.

Stacey,
Like I said, the buzzing is from the resonator. Chop it off and the sound will be gone. out of my 3 SVXes that I have/had, 2 of them did the exect thing you described at the same RPM. L

My heatshields were tightened two years ago. Buzz persisted. Replaced resonator with a straight pipe. Hasn't buzzed since. Replacement shouldn't cost more than $100, but I paid more. What does PittKid have to say about the squeaking? He should have records of brake work. Sounds brake related to me, but any mechanic of decent reputation should be able to diagnose properly.
Ron.

You can hear it with windows open and closed and it only happens at the line right before 2000 rpms. It will only do it again if I stop at a light and let the rpms drop below it.

Metal Scraping
Stacey,
Check the thin metal shields that are behind your front rotors. If someone has done the brakes recently they may have "dinged" the shield (one or both) slightly so they are rubbing against the inside of the rotor. Easy fix if this is the case -- just take the wheel off, reach in and push the shield away from the rotor. -Bill

I replaced my resonator, but still had buzzing, it was the heat sheild on the right front Cat., put a big hose clamp on it....no more buzzing...total cost $1.50
Worth jacking it up and taking a look, I hated that it always buzzed at drive thru windows I also think the squeeking is brake related. Good luck,

I'm with Huck on this. Check for a loose heat-shield first, it is a cheap fix, couple of tack welds. Currently I am hearing a sort of fizzle which I think is the resonator, as Lwin says, noise from this is also common. But do the cheap one first. Squeak is sure to be from your brakes. It may be you have a slightly warped rotor, which is catching the pad every half turn of the roadwheel. It may be the shield is bent and touching the rotor as mentioned. It can also be a small stone trapped in the calliper/pad area. These usually wear away. Alternatively it might also be you have a dry bearing. But check the brakes first, way more likely. Hard to guess about the metal scraping, without a better description. If it is coming from under the hood, it could be a pulley grinding against a loose cover. Congratulations on the new car by the way. Enjoy it! When you have these minor problems sorted, you will be happier with it and learn to trust it. Drive carefully, it is a fast car and we don't like to lose new members! Joe

Thanks, Huck and Joe.
The only reason I didn't think it was the brakes squeaking was because they don't squeak when I use them/come to a stop. Now that Joe said it could be the rotor catching, I understand more because it does happen every so few seconds as if it only occurs at a constant turn on the tires. The metal scraping sound it was bothers me the most. I felt really nervous. I wish you guys be be in the car to know what I'm talking about. Hopefully I can take it to a mechanic to look at when I'm not so busy at school. Unfortunately, I'm so overwhelmed right now (I'm in computer class as I type. ) |

I removed the heat shield on the resonator... fixed the problem for about two weeks.
I now have an intermittent rattle that seems to disappear every time I actually go to LOOK for it... LOL... I think I'm just going to remove all the heat shielding next. In addition to being quieter, it's a weight reduction mod! |
