1992 climate control display broken
I have a 1992 SVX and for some reason the number display on the climate unit doesn't light up or display anything. The button panel, the lights behind the mode / fan buttons work, and the entire hvac system seems to work just fine, its just the number display for the temp that won't show any numbers.
Has anyone had an experience with this issue or have an idea of what to check out first? |

Re: 1992 climate control display broken
I had one of the digits not reading correctly as 1 or 2 of the bars remained permanently lit. I removed and opened the unit up, not that difficult to do hoping to find a loose or bad solder joint. I couldn't find the issue as with mine I think it may have been a component failure and i'm not that good with electronics to diagnose what.
But..... If i recall correctly the display is connected to the main control board with a ribbon connector. This could be where your problem may be though it could be a component failure in a capacitor (will be obviously leaked or bulging) or a transistor. |

Re: 1992 climate control display broken
Remember the guys in the USA have different pcbs to the rest of us - their capacitors are all rated at 25 volts - CORRECT.
The rest of us with thos fancy computer controlled displays actually have a cost-down version where by Subaru opted to subcontract out the manufacture of the 2 pcbs to 2 different suppliers in Japan - one supplier used 25V caps and one used 16V caps (this is the failure mode). The 16V caps are to close to the 12V running / 13.4V charging settings, as this does not take into account the de-rating due to age/temperature of surroundings etc. I normally swap out only 1 capacitor on the PCB (it is near the end of the display) from a 16V with a 25V. I have a 4meg .docx document showing the fix that I would love to share but alas our attachment system does not allow it ????
