Oil burning smell.?!?!
Hi all,
I keep getting this oil burning smell whenever I drive my car and as soon as it gets to normal driving temperatures. As far as I noticed there are no oil leaks anywhere under the car even when it is parked for very long times. Checked the engine oil and its level is full and same with tranny fluid and P/S fluid. At first I thought its just me getting that smell, but yesterday my sister is also complaining about the smell and she is not comfortable driving it as she is afraid whether it may strand her somewhere on the road. I have replaced cam seals, valve covers recently. Wht might be the problem ?? -Pavan |

Rear crank seal leak dropping onto the exhaust. That's my bet.

check around power steering pump area. I have a tiny leak there that results in the smell, but it's so slow that you can't tell by monitoring level. Hasn't gone down noticably in over a month, but the leak is there.

But I can smell it in between the engine and firewall and also mostly on the driver's side... I am not sure if its the rear engine seal. How hard is it to replace it? _pavan

With a small leak, it would be enough to cause a stink when hitting the exhaust, but not enough to notice a decrees level.

Most likely the rear main seal, or a valve cover that didn't seal. Just out of curiosity, did you replace the seals around the spark plugs, and the little seals around each valve cover bolt? The little seal around each bolt are expensive, but will leak if you dont replace them.

The Crankcase is pressurized, {even more when running hard} and what you might be getting through the seal is an Oil Vapor instead. Alternators also have a similar smell when they get really hot, so check this too.

Maby check and see if you have a leaky trans cooler line on the passenger side. But my guess is if you had leaky cam seals, that the rear main is leaking also.

If the rear seal is leaking just a drip here and there, I wouldn't sweat it too much as its a mother to change. The smell is probably as bad as the problem will get

Lack of crank case ventilation, could well be the name of the game. Look into this subject and angle. There is provision for positive ventilation and there are several avenues which would be preventing same.
