1992 AWD trans failure

Hey today while I was driving on the freeway at 80mph my transmission made a loud snap/clunking noise and shuddered and started to slow down like when you downshift in a manual. When I pulled the car over and parked it, it would no longer switch into reverse, although it will switch into drive, I think it won't shift past 2nd gear.

The car won't even roll backwards in Neutral, but it will roll forward.

When I try to switch into reverse I hear a loud whining noise, it sounds like a gear is grinding against something.

I have been searching for hours and I haven't found a single thing that matches what my problem is.

I pulled the transmission codes and it came up with 24 for duty solenoid C, and 11 for duty solenoid A. I tried unplugging the resistor for behind the battery but it didn't change anything.

I checked the diff and trans fluid and they both smell burnt.

At this point I'd just like to try to figure out how to get it to roll backwards so I can get it home and start working on replacing the transmission.

I would greatly appreciate any input from anyone.

Re: 1992 AWD trans failure

Don't know about the inability of rolling backwards in neutral. When mine went years ago I managed to drive it to the shop in 2 nd. Took a while as I had 90 km to travel and didn't want to rev past the red line, but I got there.

Re: 1992 AWD trans failure

I had one that did that, a big boom while driving, continued to drive forward at a high rev but after parked would not go into reverse or neutral.
It went to the garage on a roll back. They used dollies on the front wheels so that they did have to drag it.

Re: 1992 AWD trans failure

The only way for me to get the car out of the parking space it's in, is to back the car up.

Can no one think of any reason why the reverae gear has failed to even engage? It just makes a really loud whining noise.

Re: 1992 AWD trans failure

Did either of you ever end up figuring out what happened to your transmission?

Re: 1992 AWD trans failure

My issue is probably different from yours, I had a problem with my ATF flow after improper filter install. The transmission had to be replaced.
