Throttle Body Modification
I do not know if this has been done before on this forum, but what I did is bypass the cooling lines that run to the throttle body. I got the idea from a guy I work with, who did this on his camaro (sad ride). He has had no negative results and only positive results especially compared to when the engine is hot. There is no valve that adusts or shuts off the flow of coolant flowing through the throttle body, so when the engine is hot, your heating up the already hot air entering the engine therefore reducing horsepower. You all get the drift.
To do this mod. I removed the plastic intake tube, removed the rubber hoses going to the throttle body, and then used 3/8 hose and ran it from where both hoses originally connected at the block and clamped each side securely. Upon trial, I noticed after repeated redline runs that there is less hesitation on the low end. I am sure the air entering the engine is a lot cooler now with the absence of 170 degree coolant flowing around it. Let me know what you think, Greg

I did that on my Corvette. The TB is alot cooler to touch now then before, so I guess the air coming in would be a little cooler. It didn't do anything for the power though

There's a little thing called 'icing' that does occur in some areas. As a gas passes through a small area it speeds up and when it expands on the other side it cools - same principle a/c works on. when it comes to throttle plates, be it carbureted or fuel injected, there's a chance in cold climates that extended high-speed driving (read: interstate travel) can cause ice to form in the t-body and not allow the throttle to close. Sometimes the ice will grow so thick that the engine loses power due to the restriction.
While you may never experience this in your neck of the woods, some cars, even if they were sold in Phoenix, may someday go on a skiing vacation in the mountains. I used to live in Colorado and although I never had the problem I did have a few customers that had removed or lost their pre-heater hoses and spent some wonderful vista time on the side of I-70 coming home from skiing.

This is a neat idea for warmer climates. It ocurred to me that folks in these climates don't get to take advangtage of the 30-40 degree night air that makes your car feel extra-energetic in the fall and winter. My GTP is very much this way. The supercharger just magnifies the effect. Last fall, coming home from work in pittsburgh...on the first chilly night for the season...i was getting on 376W from the 22 ramp (there are two interchanges in one place there so i always have to really step on it), and when i put the pedal down to where i usually have to, the car felt like it just got a new engine or something...i actually backed off the throttle cause it surprised the crap out of me. So i imagine the coolant bypass would have a somewhat similiar effect in warmer climates.

sure.... appreciates.... hrm. I think that's what you meant.
I'm tired of you sending me private messages with you calling me KID when you can't spell a word 5 letters long. Anyway. All in all I don't think the benefits of cooling your TB would be worth the risk involved, especially if you ever sell your car. If the other owner doesn't know, and decides to go into the mountains...eesh. - Ca$h Last edited by Ca$h; 09-10-2002 at 12:40 PM. |

Ca$h, I wish to retract my earlier statement that "I do not doubt that you are a nice person". Of all the people I have come across on the internet, you are the most opinionated and abrasive. You remind me of my 15 year old when he doesn't get enough sleep. Will you ever learn some social manners? You may be smart, but you are definitely unpleasant to be around. Many members have tried to offer you some objective advice on how to get along with others, all to no avail.

I get along with most people. I'll be honest here. I don't get along with solar (surprise). Know why?
1. He's a moron. 2. He has repeatedly insulted me. 3. He blames his pathetic grasp of English on his keyboard (sure) 4. He's a typical stupid person who is SO dumb they don't even realize when someone is smarter than them. I BLATENTLY and calmly explained why higher octane does not help, multiple times. He basically told me that I was dumb. 5. He puts words in my mouth, he wrote me a PM about how I was saying a neon would beat a Eclipse Turbo AWD (Gst I think?), which I never said. 6. He keeps saying that neons are so slow, yet they're about as fast as an SVX. So yeah, I think he's a retard, and I don't like him. - Ca$h |

Though I enjoy these intellectual English lessons, and how to point out retards, and morons and the like, I would have to say that I find them to be less than enjoyable, and I am frankly, getting bored with them. Let me see if I can find the word here . . . hmmmm . . . uhm . . . <I'm looking through my dictiionary. I don't want to misspell anything> . . . AH! There it is. S-O-P-H-O-M-O-R-I-C. Yes! That's it. That's the word I was looking for. Sophomoric! So, yeah, <shrug> whatever.
