steering wheel finish

Not sure this is a tech Q&A, but...

The polyurethane (or whatever) coating has come off the upper side of my steering wheel. Before the leather degrades any further, anybody found a way to repair?

I just put a steering wheel cover over mine. Found one that's this memory foam stuff, forget who makes it, but it's really comfortable and adds to my driving experiance.

That is, when I was driving . . .

I put a steering wheel cover over mine too. I got mine from Wheelskins. It is real leather and is easy to stich on. You can buy them one color, or two colors.

thanks guys, I tried a cheapo wheel cover and it looked like...well can't say on a family orientated site

so....I'm assuming nobody has found a restorative product?

I agree, there is NO leather product better than Leatherique, but....

It works on aniline & semi-aniline leather; however, most of the SVX steering wheel has some sort of plastic coating. I know Lexus uses a polyurethane coating on almost all their leather surfaces. I was hoping someone knew how to reapply a coating to make the wheel surface consistent.

just out of curiosity, how much would cost to refurbish our svx leather in the states, some nice genuine leather? the front seats and the back ones?

They even have a "photogenesis" system where they can match the finish on part of your wheel to your dash. Just send them a sample (such as your ashtray and they will duplicate the finish for your wheel.

plastic-coated leather??? never knew that.

i was referring to Leatherique's crack-filler and dye products.

call them and talk to them - they are very nice and helpful .

I was over on the ClubLexus forum (help needed for my daughters car) and they mentioned that a good automotive paint shop would have Dupont or SEM leather/vinyl dyes with a clearcoat system.

This is what I think I've been looking for. It's got to be cheaper than recovering - maybe not much more than a wheelskin. My leather is OK for now, but probably not much longer without a lot of care or some coating. In the next couple of days I'll try to find some, but then I live in a small town...

i'd go the dye route - besides the fact that i hear the wheelskins are a nightmare to put on, i really haven't seen one yet that looks good installed.

i always use a wheelcover on my cars, because i have corrosive sweat - i destroy steering wheels and guitar strings. i gotta keep it looking nice for the next owner.
