Help Help Help.
Okay so as I pulled into the parking lot at work today I started to smell a burrning metal odor coming out of the vents. I pulled quickly into a spot an noticed smoke comming from under the hood. After popping the hood I noticed the somke was comming from behind my main pulley. I had a friend come out and trun her over while I looked to see what it was. After being turned over there was a squeeking sound followed by the car stalling, and another slight smell of metal on metal. I think it may be my water pump, but I am unsure dose anyone have any ideas on what it may be. Please someone HELP. Thanks Chris ![]() ![]() |

More info on problem
Okay here is a little more info on the prob. This may help some out there understand what I am talking about. After looking in my SVX repair manual. The smoke is comming from in between the timing marks and i believe its the crank shaft pulley. Please any help words of wisdom, I could really use it right now.
Thanks Chris |

I'd start off by looking at exactly where the smoke is coming from.
Where there's smoke, there's probably a leak too. With the engine off, look for anywhere where there might appear to be a leak. It sounds like you have to remove the timing cover to see what's happening, given that's where the smoke is coming from. What's your fluids (engine, transmission, differential) looking like right now? Any smells in the fluid? VK |

Re: Smoke Coming From under the hood?

If I had to guess....you have exactly the same problem I had with my pulley coming apart. Mine made the same noise, and started to smoke as it ate my timing cover away. However I stopped mine before it got too bad, as if you don't it will eat your timing belt pulleys as well. You available tomorrow? I'm going to be taking mine to that Exhaust Pro's you did in Northglenn. If you want I could swing by and take a look afterwards, or you can meet me over at the exhaust place. Let me know either on here, or call me sometime today. Later, Ryan

It is looking to be the same problem you had with your pulley. There is no fluid leak anywhere, it looks normal untill you turn it on, then it makes a very bad sound followed by smoke. If you are going to be up this way tomorrow maybe you can help me with it. One Question how in gods green earth did you get the pulley off? Let me know Chris |

Ryan
I will have to run down to JCS first thing. Look as thought they are going out of business. However a friend was down there a few days ago and they still had the pulleys so I guess I will head down there right away so as to not have to order the parts. If you are in northglenn my house is only like 5 mile away. if you wanted to meet my over by my place then we could head down there real quick and get the parts. Well just give me a ring and let me know. Look My 100th Post Kick A$$ Later Chris, |

When you guys have time, I would like to know, are you talking about the pulley that attaches to the crank shaft coming apart? I have never heard of anything like that before. I would guess there is a rubber isolator in the middle somewhere and this has broken down? Is it possible that someone has over tightened the belts and caused this?
I have changed the timing belts on a 2.2 engine and the main pulley is a tough nut to crack. ![]() I have also noticed that after market belts need to be tighten more as compared to Suby belts. Well any way that is my experience on this. |

Crank Shaft pulley
Yeah it is the Crankshaft pulley, it took Ryan and myself about 10 mins to get it off.
See once the rubber broke down the pulley move back against the plastic timing belt cover, thus producing the smoke. However unlike Ryan I was already at work so I stoped right a way and only left a little mark where it rubbed so I am only going to have to replace the crankshaft pulley. Thank god. Check out Ryans Website for picts and Directions on how to do it. I could not belive how easy it really was to get that pulley off. Later Chris |
