Transmission ID

how do you tell what transmission I have, I got one from a yard a while back and Im not sure if its 2wd or 4wd, and second does it matter if its 2 or 4wd, can you put a 4wd trans in a 2wd car? I only ask because I am in the process of buying a 94 2wd with a bad trans, and I have a trans in the garage, thanks Johnny

Re: Transmission ID

first get the number of the top of the trans I can tell you what it is.like this TZ1022M1AA. second 4 wheel drive has a output shaft out the end. next lot of work to convert to 4 wheels drive. also the 2 wheel drive are 3.70 gears.

Re: Transmission ID

They're are not very many 2WD Subaru transmissions around. For many years almost all Subarus have been 4WD.

Re: Transmission ID

so the one I have in the garage on a stand is TZ102ZM2AA- KR, I see the output shaft on this one , so I would tend to believe it is 4 wheel drive, do you think its possible the one Im trying to buy 1994, is 4 wheel drive but the owner doesnt know its 4 wheel drive, as I know on my 92 there is a fuse to pull to make it 2 wheel drive. if by chance the 94 is 2 wheel drive , would my 4 wheel drive trans work in it?

Re: Transmission ID

You're doing a lot of wishful thinking.
Your transmission will have 3 outputs if it is 4wd. Left and right for the front wheels and rear for the back wheels.
The '94 is likely a 2wd if he says so. It takes 10 seconds to look under it and see if there are CV axles going to the front wheels and a driveshaft to the rear differential. 2wd is front wheels only.

A 4wd transmission can only be used on a 4wd car and a 2wd transmission can only be used on a 2wd car.

Personally I wouldn't buy a 2wd SVX for any price, especially with a blown transmission.

Re: Transmission ID

If I could get him to send me the VIN, could I go to the subaru dealer and have them run a check on the car to see what it was born with?
