Cracked screw holes in arm rests
Upon becoming very annoyed over my rattly interior, I decided to randomly tighten up screws. Unfortunately, I over tightened the screws in the arm rests, which has cracked a few of the holes. Now the doors rattle like my roommate's 75 Dodge truck.
I was thinking it may be a good idea to find some sort of large rubber washers to go under the screws and over the cracked holes, such that the screws will be able to hold the rests firmly in place without causing anymore damage. What do you guys think? Is this the best way? I swear, this car is starting to piss me off with all these freaking rattles. This weekend, I'm going to rip stuff apart and go nuts with a can of silicon spray. I don't care if I break things. Otherwise, I feel I may loose my temper and take a baseball bat to the f@cker. Please excuse my hostility.

Might work...
Washers might work if you get the right sizes, which armrests are you talking about? The door armrests are screwed into metal, you would need to tighten them pretty hard to break the holes. When I put in my 6x9's I tightened all the back nuts and actually snapped a bolt I haven't figured out what it goes to yet and the bolt is still suspended, just not attached.

Calm down it's only a car. I have taken the center console apart and glued it back togeather with RTV. That ended all the creaks from that area.
I have also sprayed silicone lube into the dash crevesses and that helped a lot. Some of the rattles you hear in the door and over head may be wiring connectors bouncing around. Most of these have a foam pad around them but can still rattle some. Using some sticky backed felt or similar can help reduce the noise on the plastic door lock toggle. Take your time finding the spots and the noises will go away. I do not like those noises either and I do like the SVX and I want it to be quiet. |

I love my car so much that I am going to build a glass enclosure for it in my basement. That way it will never get damaged and I can sit and look at a true work of art when I am home. Heck I think I'll just add a green house on the back of my house. I have a 167K miles on the body. It's going to make a few noises from old age. So I am going to take care of it cause I want to drive it. It's still just a special car that I care about. |

Thanks for all the advice.
I was able to find rubber and metal washers that have solved the problem with the doors. I put one metal washer and one rubber washer under the screw and it seems to be very firm. I've also purchased a can of silicon spray. I took the door panels off and sprayed a few things, but I didn't really see much that could potentially rattle. I did notice unfoamed wire connectors. So other than that, there's the dash and everything else that I'll have to deal with one step at a time. Will silicon spray hurt anything? Or can I spray it anywhere without worry? Does it eventually dry up or does the sprayed surface stay greasy?

I try to find 3M spray because there are no petro products in it. However, I have not been able to find it and used some with petro products and it worked fine. Spary a little on a piece of plastic that is in a non-visable area and see if it harms it. The petro propellants will evaporate off quickly and those chemicals may harm plastic. I did mine about 2 years ago and it took about a month to work it's way in. It is still holding up okay. Most of the noise in my car is from the plastic trying sliding against another piece of plastic. This makes it snap and pop. The silicone allows it to slide and not make noise. I would rather try this than taking the dash out.
