Angry Rear Ended: SVX sandwiched

At around 3:20 pm today (10/26) I was rear ended and pushed into the vehicle ahead of me.

I was heading in the left lane down the street, traffic was rather busy ahead of me, and suddenly the car in front of me was stopped. I slammed on my brakes and came to a complete stop, all while at the same time looking in my rearview mirror and knowing the '77 Chevy Silverado behind me had no chance of stopping in time. So I braced for impact. As soon as he slammed into the back of me my eyes closed, and when I re-opened them I noticed I was halfway on the median and the car that was ahead of me, a Chevy Monte Carlo, was now on my right and that his left rear taillight was busted out. I sat there for a second, swore my choice word, and stepped out of the vehicle to walk around to the back. Not pretty. The bumper is smashed, not as badly as I thought it'd be, but there's a hole punctured in it. The trunk was pushed up and forward rather violently. Then I walked around to the right side and was greeted by a dented front right wheel fender and scrapes and dents all along the entire right side of the vehicle.

Immediately we all began to exchange information. The guy who hit me is one of my good friends, and he has complete coverage. The guy ahead of me has liability.

At that moment a police car rolled up. He stepped out and asked if we'd called the police yet; we explained we were in the process of exchanging info and would be doing that ASAP. Then he left...

Because traffic was so horribly congested and we were a main cause of it, we moved our vehicles into the Wells Fargo parking lot. (Luckily my car was still driveable). The entrance was exactly next to where the accident happened. I called the police and reported what had happened. 10-15 minutes later an officer showed up, took all of our info and had us fill out accident reports. He gave us all a report number, and told me and the guy in front of me that we were free to go. The driver of the truck was issued a ticket for following too closely and stayed behind with the cop.

Some pictures I took with my phone immediately after the accident: (btw, that's not a JDM folding sideview mirror...)

Wow.

I am sorry. that SUCKS. Enough to say it twice... that SUCKS.

I am glad that you are OK, that is the most important thing.

Let us know how it goes with the insurance process. Sympathies for your car and well wishes for you from a fellow mid-western Claret driver just a few miles down the road in Iowa.

Wow, that poor guy, it's the worst when you get a ticket for following to closely, bad enough the accident happened. I mean, people are always following to closely in today's world.

Oh yeah, bummer about your SVX too.

Kidding, kidding. That seriously sucks. To repair that would suck and cost a freaking fortune. I think that when an insurance company totals a vehicle they should be responsible for replacing it. It wasn't your fault, why should you have to go through the effort?

Re: Rear Ended: SVX sandwiched

Sorry to hear about your SVX. I know that if mine got hit, I would be devistated. But I agree that your safety comes first. Although accidents with our beloved subarus are always tragic, it does reinforce the feeling of safety I have inside my car.

I hope your parents say yes to another SVX. But a WRX or nice Legacy would make a suitable replacement as well.

Re: Rear Ended: SVX sandwiched

Is there any way you can find out what salvage yard the car is going to?

If it stays in the omaha area, I might be interested in pulling some parts. I would even consider buying the car as a rolling parts donor, if it is cheap enough.

Did the insurance company give you a buy-back price at all?

I'm not sure of the name of it, but I'll get back to you on that. Pretty sure it's in the omaha area. The buy back price from insurance was $900.

Scratch what I mentioned above; the car is located on this site:

https://www.iaai.com/Vehicles/Search...ears=1991-1997

It's the Insurance Auto Auctions.
That's as much as I know for now.

First off, congrats on another SVX...

My brother in law and I found that last weekend, and I figured the omaha car was yours.

He works for a body/resto shop that works mostly on Vettes, but they deal a lot with the insurance auction.

I asked him and his co-workers to keep an eye out for it. Do you mind letting me know which insurance company you use, and is selling the car at auction?

You can PM me, if you don't want to broadcast it... but the name of the insurance company auctioning the car is all he asked for other than he already knows from this thread, and that auction listing.

It goes up to auction tomorrow, 11/25/09. The body shop told me you have to register on IAAI's site to bid but that's $200/year. I didn't see a one-time price.
If you/anyone esle buys it let me know.
