Transmission filter

How hard is it to install a transmission filter if I were to do it myself? Mainly, im thinking about this filter

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Genuine-Subaru-SVX-ATF-Transmission-Filter-Kit-OEM-NIB_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33662QQitemZ8010001 440QQrdZ1

Actually, now that I think about it, I might even have one on my tranny already. The people I bought my SVX from took good care of it, and its possible that when they rebuilt it, they put one on. Well, that raises another question, where would it be located if I were to already have one? That way I can take a quick look under my hood and see if its there or not. No sense in buying another one if I might possibly already have one. Thanks in advance.

You probably have one. The ATF auxiliary filter was part of the ATK-50 recall campaign for the 92 SVX, and was installed at no charge. See the Technical Service Bulletin HERE

If you have it, you will be able to see it from under the hood. Look between the battery and the engine. It is just underneath the engine and to the left of the battery.

From underneath the car it is attached to the driver's side frame rail, using one of the tow hook brackets

This is what it looks like from under the car below the battery.

For reference, front of the car is at the bottom of the photo. The top of the filter faces the rear of the car.

EDIT: The top of the filter is the smooth end, not the end with the hose connections

Umm...no, I remember when I took that picture. The front of the car is at the bottom of the photo, see the radiator? And the inlet/outlet (top) of the filter faces the front of the car.

OK, well I looked and I dont see one in there, its possible and highly likely that I am an idiot though. But if this was a recall, isnt there a way to call subaru and give them my VIN number, and they can check to see if it was given the recall? Does anyone have the information on that?

No, I definetly dont have one installed there. That is so uncool. Is it still possible to have subaru install one for me, or was that only done under warranty?

I'm telling ya that's a photo of my engine compartment, about 5 years ago and much cleaner then, and he's wrong. The black rectangular object at the top right corner is the battery and you can see the headlight leveler at the bottom right.

Ok, in the SVXipedia, I found the TSB for the A/T Auxiliary Filter Kit. It lists the applicability as "92MY SVX UP TO AND INCLUDING NH106285". My VIN ends in NH108593. Wouldnt that mean that I already have a filter?

It should, but that does not mean that it does. The picture in question shows the drivers side of the car. The filter is directly below the battery and the top of the filter (left round part) faces to the back of the car.

If the "left round part" is the end directly opposite the inlet/outlet, then yes it does face the rear. I guess I have a different interpretation of the "top" of the filter, though you can't see it in the picture. The timing belt cover is in the way.
